Beothuk Star QAL Progress

I’ve joined in with the Beothuk Star Quilt Along hosted by Sandra of mmm!Quilts. This is a fun, low key quilt along with a design that makes a big impact. There’s still time to quilt along with us, so let me entice you just a little by giving you a little more information and showing you the gorgeous fabrics I’m using.

Beothuk Star QAL Progress - My HSTs all assembled and ready for the next step - piecefulthoughts.com

The photo above is the step I just finished, getting the half square triangles sewn and finished. I’ll introduce you to the fabrics in just a bit, but let’s talk about the name of the QAL first.

A Unique QAL Name

So, why the name Beothuk Star? Well, I’ll let Sandra explain that. She has great story to the background of the name here, which came about while she was working another amazing quilt.

Meet the Fabrics

I have had the fabrics for this QAL since Sandra curated them for Bernie at Needle & Foot as part of the Blogger Bundle series last year. Some of the fabrics are from Art Gallery, and if you’ve never worked with them, you really should. The hand of the fabric is just lovely.

I hadn’t fully opened my bundle until I began cutting the fabric. Oh my goodness, these fabrics are gorgeous! Let me show you. I never even thought to stage the photos; I’m just going to let the fabric have center stage.

Beothuk Star QAL Progress - The Art Gallery fabric that drew me to this bundle that I purchased from Needle & Foot - piecefulthoughts.com

This Art Gallery print drew me to this bundle in the first place. I love the bold, graphic design.

Beothuk Star QAL Progress - This Carrie Bloomston print for Windham Fabrics is so pretty; a low volume print with a very delicate brushstroke effect - piecefulthoughts.com

This Carrie Bloomston fabric for the background is a low volume light sand with a subtle brushstroke design. It is just beautiful; my photo doesn’t do it justice.

Beothuk Star QAL Progress - This yellow print, Boho Meadow, is so pretty and delicate; I purchased this at Needle & Foot - piecefulthoughts.com

I actually have an additional yard of this Boho Meadow fabric in my stash, earmarked for another project. I didn’t remember that it was part of this bundle when I ordered it, so I’m delighted that I have more!

Beothuk Star QAL Progress - Another Art Gallery Fabric beauty, Cinese Mystery, purchased at Needle & Foot - piecefulthoughts.com

Of all the fabrics, this Art Gallery piece was the one I wasn’t really that excited about — until I opened it. The design is beautiful and the green, gold and teal glow against the dark background!

Beothuk Star QAL Progress - This Violet Purple fabric by Bear Essentials is so pretty; I purchased this from Needle & Foot - piecefulthoughts.com

I currently have a crush on anything in this berry shade. It is Violet Purple by Bear Essentials. The color is very vibrant and saturated.

Beothuk Star QAL Progress - This fabric, PBT Elements Textures in Blue for P & B Textiles is so pretty. It is a great blender fabric that I purchased at Needle & Foot - piecefulthoughts.com

This P & B Textiles fabric literally made me gasp when I opened it. It is just stunning. Photos don’t capture the bright intensity of the color. It is a great blender fabric, but I think it would terribly fun to use in an improv project. I’m seriously crushing on this piece, and so tempted to order more from Bernie.

If you’re interested in joining in the QAL, Sandra has all the information right here., or you can click on the Beothuk Star button on my sidebar. You can choose your own fabric, but if you are interested in the fabrics shown above, Bernie still has some available at Needle & Foot. She also has another color way available that Sandra has also curated for this QAL, so take a look at that as well. (Both bundles can be found under Bernie’s “Fabric Bundles & Precuts” tab.) It would be great fun to have you join in!

Come Back on Friday!

Speaking of fabric, on Friday I’ll be sharing a little bit about where I find my fabric. It’s a bit of a follow up to my Choosing Fabric post from last Friday. A few of you mentioned not having local quilt shops, so I thought a post on finding fabric might be a good way to share information with each other. I’d love to have you stop back and join in with your comments on your favorite places to find and purchase fabric. See you then!

Wendy, the fabrics are lovely! I love Sandra’s quilt design and the other color option that is available. I checked out Bernie’s shop and will make a purchase sometime today — she has several cute bundles! Happy Wednesday ♥

The first fabric, Art Gallery, looks like someone paper pieced rectangles and made the diamond! And I so understand why you gasped at that teal/blue one, gorgeous!!

Hi Wendy! See, I knew you were playing along but didn’t recall you were using the bundle. I could gush along with you about these fabrics. Ooh-la-la they are nice. LOVE the sand, and the berry, and the turquoise . . . oh heck, all of them. You are all ready to go today! ~smile~ Roseanne

lovely fabric! I am one that does not have a shop anywhere near by and do most of my purchases on line unless I am traveling – I always look for the sales from Hancocks of Paducah, Bluprint, and Fat Quarter Shop mainly sometimes Missouri Star Quilt Co too

Fun to see your reaction to the bundle. It is the thing I love about seeing fabric in person – that some things just don’t reflect well in photos. I am so glad the story of the Beothuk is being retold..I will highlight it too.

  • Needle and Foot

What a nice post – thank you for sharing the fabrics Wendy. It was so interesting to work with Sandra when she put that bundle together. It all works perfectly together and she spent quite a long time playing with different combinations to come up with this one. I am pleased you are so happy with it.

I try to be strong in the face of temptation to buy fabric in general (because I have plenty) but now you are undermining my defenses by showing me one fabulous fabric after another! I really love that last one, the turquoise and green. (I love the others too but I am shielding my eyes from those for the moment.) 🙂

That is gorgeous fabric! I didn’t buy Sandra’s bundle last year, and now wish I had! It will be fun to see how the Beothuk quilt comes together in those. Looks like you’re ready to make some blocks, too! I’m still making HSTs, but it won’t be long until I’m ready for this week’s step.

Thanks for sharing, Wendy. Always love to see the fabric choices of others. My plan is to join in (have cut fabric), however “life” has gotten in the way. Those Bear essentials colours and fabrics are really nice (I won a set last year and as they are not available locally, it was wonderful to see). Enjoy the rest of your week.

Thank you so much Wendy for highlighting both the history (HERstory) and the fabrics. Letting each fabric shine on its own in a picture it does really help, however, you are absolutely right in that the pictures don’t do them justice until you see them open and pet them! Glad you like my combo and thank you so much for joining in. Can’t wait to see your quilt!
