Little Gem

Little Gem is my Friday finish this week. This little quilt was made using V & Co Ombre Confetti fabric that I received as a half-yard bundle in a Sew Sampler box. I had no idea how I wanted to use the fabric until Sew Preeti Quilts posted her Picket Star block. I knew the fabrics would work well with that block design.

Preeti wrote an excellent post on how to construct the block, and making four of them went quickly. I had enough fabric left over to add a 3″ border and just enough for a pieced binding. I love it when I can use the whole bundle in one quilt!

At 42″, the quilt was small enough that I could have quilted it myself. I knew, though, that Connie would have some fun with this, and I was right! This center medallion quilting with the variegated thread that picks up all the colors in the fabrics makes me very happy.

I like the combination of designs in each of the picket stars. The design fits perfectly, doesn’t it?

The border design ties it in so nicely.

I had no idea what to use for the quilt backing, and nothing in my stash seemed to fit. I decided to visit Needle & Foot and see if Bernie had anything in her shop that would work, and I found this gorgeous floral print, Bloom with Grace by Connie Haley for Three Wishes Fabric.

I was so happy with how well it matched the quilt top. It is such a pretty floral design; bright, cheery and so feminine.

Connie used bobbin thread that matched each picket star block. I love the bright neon pink thread; it really catches the eye when you turn the quilt over.

The pink block is so intense, you can see the block shadowing through the backing. It almost looks like the quilt top has bled, but it hasn’t (I haven’t washed it).

Now to decide – wall quilt or baby quilt? I almost can’t bear to let this one go. Little Gem is definitely one of my favorite makes of 2020.

Thanks, Preeti, for the fun Picket Star block design and tutorial!

Happy Friday, all! Enjoy your weekend!

Oh what a lovely, fresh, delightful quilt. I also love the quilting of the central medallion. Connie certainly can work magic.
What about keeping it as a lap quilt for yourself? It will be a cheerful reminder of flower gardens during the winter months

Hi Wendy! What a fabulous finish for today. I think you should hang on to this quilt – it’s a nice spot of color wherever you may hang it. Yesterday’s tease showing the quilting really was just the tip of the iceberg. Every bit of this is just perfect including that pretty backing. Good job! ~smile~ Roseanne

Wow!!! Pretty! Pretty! Pretty!!! And maybe I’ll throw in a Preeti!! Wendy, what a beautiful quilt!!! How much fabric did you get in that box? That is just gorgeous. And Connie did an amazing job quilting it to heaven and back! And I’ve got to mention Bernie and her beautiful backing fabric. Wow! Love the scrappy border and binding. That needs to hang on a wall as a cheery reminder of all the connections it holds.

This is so pretty! Perfect combination of fabric, block, and quilting! I do really like the quilting, especially in the open background spaces. And is that variegated thread? I do love a pretty variegated thread. I say hang on to this one for a while. If it’s one of your favorites, keep it with you for a bit. If it’s meant to be gifted, you’ll know when/if the right recipient comes along. Beautiful finish!

Very cute quilt. I’ve seen those Ombre Confetti fabrics in the quilt shops, but I wasn’t sure how it would look in a quilt. It looks great in this one. Nice to see it made up into something. I love that backing fabric. I was getting set up to work on my triple Irish chain yesterday, and considering what kind of backing fabric would look good. I like this one. Nice work. Pretty quilting.

You may call her a little gem (Gemma is more apt, in my opinion) but she packs a big punch. She sparkles and pops!!! So pretty and beautifully quilted. Thank you for the shout-out. Since all your Picket Star points are intact, I am sure that you followed the directions perfectly. Have a great weekend, Wendy!

Oh, great finish and yes the quilting is fun! I love your backing choice! I still haven’t completed my Confetti Ombre quilt because I can’t figure out what to put on the back. Hoping to find something on the shop hop but I do have a white on white I could use (it’s just not very pretty). Well anyway, bravo!

Oh wow, that is an intense pink for it to show through so boldly on the back (I’d definitely throw a few color catchers in the first wash when it’s time)! The quilting and thread color compliment it so well, and hooray for finding such a perfect backing with Bernie.

Wow!! I was hooked yesterday with the preview of the quilting. Today, I’m drooling! I love the pattern you used and the confetti ombre is so delicious. I love the way you used leftovers for the border and the binding. And the back is just the perfect match. I would want to hold on to this myself, at least for awhile. Congratulations on a great finish.

I don’t blame you one bit for wanting to keep this one! It’s a real beauty. The ombre fabrics work so, so well with both the picket stars and the border treatment. Did you buy it as a FQ bundle? Such yummy fabrics! And the backing is sweet as cotton candy 🙂

Gorgeous quilting, gorgeous fabric, a gorgeous little quilt! I think it’s definitely a keeper. I use these to take to yoga classes I teach. Perfect size to sit upon. 🙂 And you wouldn’t believe how many quilter/yogi friends I’ve made through doing this!

Oh my gosh, Wendy — this is GORGEOUS! What a spectacular use of the V& CO ombre fabric! Your blocks glow like gemstones! And I love that you found the tutorial on Preeti’s blog and sourced the backing from Bernie’s shop, too. It’s like all of my favorite quilt bloggers coming together to create quilty MAGIC! 🙂

This is one of the prettiest quilts I’ve ever seen! I’m in love with Preeti’s pattern and only have made one block so far. It’s fun to see it in these gorgeous fabrics. The quilting is just perfect, and I love how it emphasizes the background pattern. That backing is beautiful. I’d keep it!
