The Quilted Chicken

The Quilted Chicken – wouldn’t that be a fun name for a quilt shop? I’m already designing it in my head. A front porch with a rocking chair, chicken figurines here and there. Maybe a pet chicken? But I digress.

Sandra over at mmm!Quilts reminded me of this quilt when she posted her Throwback Thursday quilt on her blog. You can read her story about her quilt here. Don’t forget to come back here though!

This quilt was made a long, long time ago. I almost chickened out.

But I saw this quilt pattern, The Black Hen by Indigo Junction, and just had to make it. (Even back then, squirrels were beginning to wreak havoc in my sewing room.) The copyright date on the pattern is 1999, and I have egg on my face just admitting that.

It took me another few years to get this quilt finished. I had projects back to back that I needed to get done first. At least that was my story.

The Quilted Chicken - Another sneak peek at this oldie, but goodie - piecefulthoughts.com I hand stitched it and was never happy with what I had done, so I brought it to Connie who graciously made it look so much better.

The Quilted Chicken - A little glam shot of this old, but fun quilt. The pattern is The Black Hen by Indigo Junction - piecefulthoughts.com

I was pretty egg-cited about that!

The quilt was pieced, but the beak, comb and waddle attached by fusible appliqué.  All of the fabrics came from my stash at the time, if I recall correctly. The finished size of the quilt is 30″ x 37″.

The pattern even had one chick that looked just like me. Imagine that!

All silliness aside, here’s the full view of this quilt as it basks in the sun on our not-so-pretty storage bin.

I have scrambled to find a spot to hang this in my house. My kitchen doesn’t have any wall space large enough. It might look a bit crazy hanging in my living room. Maybe it will just come home to roost on a chair.

I’m linking up today with Sandra’s Throwback Thursday at mmm!Quilts.

I hope you enjoyed this little hen party! What’s going on over at your nest? Any fun projects?

Happy Friday, all!

What a cute country quilt. I love the fabrics in the quilt. I want to make a chicken quilt and haven’t done it yet. I think it’s going to be quite an addition to the coop. we had a chicken coop on the property where I grew up and we had no chickens. We had to keep all the farm animals at our grandparents house a 1/4 mile away because my brother was severely allergic to all the farm animals. They also had a chicken coop and had chickens for some time. Thanks for the memories – both yours and mine.

Well, it’s very cute. I was reading an old blog post yesterday (for another reason) and came across a pattern I bought long ago and never made. It had chickens on it. So many projects I never started. Still working on getting some of the oldest ones out of my sewing room.

Hi Wendy! Aww, what a fun post! I love this little chicken quilt, and that really would be a fun name for a quilt shop. I can picture all of it, too, except for the darn mascot who would certainly peck someone. Sue for sure, she says! She’s had run ins with chickens before. HAHA! Anyway, the quilting on this just makes this piece all the more fun, and I love the border you added. Fabulous! And 1999 wasn’t all that long ago! Happy Happy Friday to you! ~smile~ Roseanne

Once again your wittiness comes out! I still love homespun fabrics and have a bunch to prove it, LOL Yes you do need to find a place to display this cute piece.

Both of us had 1999 quilts that finished later! We are two peas in a pod. I have to laugh about the one that looks like you – too funny. What about on a flag pole outside….back of door in sewing room. I hate running out of space and have begun giving more things away as a result of it.

I couldn’t help but to make chicken sounds while reading your post. Funny, I have a farm theme in my kitchen and have a quilt made with chicken fabric. I have room to hang up your quilt but bet you’ll be too chicken to send it to me. Still clucking here……

A whole post about earthy chickens??? No omelettes, no chicken fingers, no eggs benedict? Oh Wendy, I eggspected better from you 😀
But if you do end up with a Quilted Chicken Shop, I promise to pay a visit and even put in a good word about it 🙂

You are just too funny! I chuckled all the way through. Always feel better hearing others have patterns and quilts and fabric from 1999! Isn’t there a fabulous Prince song with that title or something close to it? As for quilt shop, there’s one in Alberta that I patronized on a regular basis: The Chicken Coop. I taught her son, and even won (before I taught him) the grand prize in her first quilt show! It may have been 1999 if I recall…and yes, her shop is all things chicken, with some fabulous chicken fabrics!

What a funny post Wendy!! Well done. 🙂 Love the chicken quilt – do you have a spot where you can change out wall quilts with the season? It would be a fun one to hang. Hope you are enjoying your time with your daughter! I am sure you are.

Love these little chickens in their country themed fabric. This little chicken is slogging through the mess in the sewing room.
