Sweet Pea Quilt Top

My Sweet Pea quilt top is the result of doing a pattern test for Cindy of Stitchin’ at Home. The name of her pattern is Outside Stars.

I made the baby size of the quilt pattern, using Bliss and Bloom fabric by Riley Blake.

The quilt top finishes at 42″ x 42″ and is paper pieced. Cindy’s pattern offers lap and queen sizes as well. I love the secondary designs that form in the pattern when the blocks are sewn together. There is so much movement in this quilt. It is a fun pattern that will work with many different color ways.

BigJ and I took a drive today and took the quilt out for my first try at a photo shoot. The Cannon River runs through our little town, and it is running high after all of our rain.

Notice how high the water is under the bridge.

Looking the other direction, you can see that the water is nipping the branches of some of the trees.

At the same location, we had a little fun with the Sweet Pea Quilt and three bicycle sculptures by the river. The bike sculptures are there to honor the woman who was instrumental in the development of the bike trail that runs along the river.

Another Sweet Addition to my Quilt Family

Well, actually, to my UFO stack. We had a garage sale at our last quilt group. I wasn’t going to buy anything, since I had just come home from the Minnesota Quilt Show. But this little lovely called my name. I bought her for a song and I love her! I’m even considering hand quilting on this one.

I just had to show her off! If you look closely at the star tip on the upper right, there’s some puckering. I may have to do some work to fix that, or I’ll just leave it as part of her personality. If you know me well, you know it was the orange background that did me in!

Anyway, back to the Sweet Pea Quilt. If you like the pattern, please take a moment and visit Cindy’s blog, Stitchin’ at Home, for information on how to get the pattern, and to see her beautiful version of her quilt.

What’s your latest quilty acquisition? Fabric? Quilt top? Cool notion? Let me know by leaving a comment!

Love the pretty fabrics you chose. Is it all paper pieced or just part of it? Love that you got brave and enlisted DH’s help for a photo shoot in public-did you get any strange looks?

Wendy, I really like that sweet pea quilt! Beautiful! And thank you for the wonderful Scenic photos as well!

  • Louise Hornor

These are both really pretty! Sweet Pea is so soft and gentle and would make a wonderful baby gift. The big, adopted star top is vibrant and full of energy. I completely understand why you had to have her 🙂

All my new acquisitions are waiting for me in our mailbox and I’m itching to get my hands on them. There’s my winnings from H2H, a package from KaHolly, several eBay purchases and soon a package from Stitch Stash Diva that I won on Sandra’s Playtime Plus QAL! We need to get someplace where I can have my mail delivered ASAP!!

Both your quilts are lovely. Fix the puckering? Perish the thought. It’s part of the process. As for paper-piecing, you know how I feel about doing it. Love the look however, and I love pink and green together.

my latest things to the stash are featured on my blog today – I got a bit when out and about in WI, MN and MO – most at the Missouri Start Quilt Co – I got in a lot of shopping! Your quilt looks great. I barely kept up with blogs while we were traveling and now playing catch up and will be reading and browsing through blogs for days to come

You know something? Cindy asked me to test her pattern. Unfortunately, I was too busy on previous engagements so I had to politely decline. But you did a fabulous job. Sweet Pea is beautiful and I am sure she will make a lovely quilt.
Oh Wendy, I am so jealous of your fabulous find. I think it is cheddar not orange (I am trying to show-off my knowledge of colors to assuage my jealous feelings) :-p Have a great week!!!

    • piecefulwendy

Thanks, Preeti! You’ll have to make the pattern with those lovely colors you use. It would really pop!

Wendy, sew pretty! I’m wondering too, how much is paper pieced? Great bicycle photo. Nice they had some colorful bikes on display. Not all of us have banana colored bicycles in our garage!?! And yes, the water is so high around here right now. Wow. I know I’m writing a book here, but I also want to comment on your purchase. What a great quilt, what great colors! How old do you think it is?

  • Rebecca Grace

Ooh, I love your Sweet Pea AND your gorgeous cheddar star top! You were brave photographing them over the river, though. I would have been afraid a gust of wind would carry them away into the water!

Love this quilt and your photo shoot looks like it was fun. My new tool I love is clearly angles. Makes seams and diagonal sewing so much easier – no drawing lines. My second one for Maine is arriving this week (unfortunately in Massachusetts) because I cut the first one to fit my machine in Mass. and it didn’t work so well in Maine. OY.

I’m with you about the gorgeous secondary pattern in Cindy’s quilt pattern. It really keeps the eye moving, and you chose beautiful fabrics to bring it out. Your vintage star is Oh, so lovely, and I am totally jealous of you! I’m also hand quilting a vintage top at the moment, and love the opportunity to finish someone else’s work. I do so hope you enjoy it.

Beautiful paper piecing and beautiful find! You’ll have so much fun coming up with quilting for it, I can’t wait to see what you do!

  • Kate

Lovely Sweet Pea quilt Wendy and the pic with the bikes is perfect. Now I’m wondering how you will quilt it. I can’t believe someone would part with the star quilt after all that work, but one quilters loss is another quilters gain. Good Luck with the hand quilting.

  • Bernie

How fun to read this post and see two very different quilts- I love the green and pink color combo as well as the pattern. Really good secondary patterns. The Lone Star top is gorgeous. Hand quilting it would be perfect. Easy for me to say since I am not the one doing it! Haha. Two very cool projects though!

  • Sandra Walker

Well duh, no clue how I missed this post, but I have bought Cindy’s pattern, and should be using it for secondary patterns, our July challenge, but I’ve designed one of my own! Wonder if I have time for two?! Love the pink and green, so very feminine and pretty!
