Tecolote Block

The Tecolote block is the final block in the Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail sew along hosted by Melva Loves Scraps. I’m so grateful to Melva for coming up with this idea for a sew along, and for sharing excerpts from her relative, Marian Russell, author of the book Land of Enchantment. If you’ve been following along, reading the excerpts and sewing the blocks, I’d encourage you to read the entire book. It is an interesting history.

I followed the same colors as Melva used in her block, finding a deep navy floral which I have decided is for Marian and her longing for a Brussels carpet. While the fabric looks nothing like the carpet, the floral made me think of it.

I am excited to piece the blocks together for the top, and I will be doing that soon. Of course, I have some other projects I need to get done before I can do so. I hope to get them done this week so I can begin the piecing.

So I’m just a bit bittersweet about the Tecolote block, although I thoroughly enjoyed stitching it up. From now on, when we go visit Santa Fe, my thoughts will turn to Marian Russell and her memories of traveling the Santa Fe Trail. Thanks again, Melva, for this fun sew along with you!
