Pieceful Life

A Likeable Thursday

It’s a likeable Thursday here at Pieceful Thoughts. I’ll be sharing some of my likes from the past week, and joining in with the others listed with LeeAnna over at Not Afraid of Color

Some of you might recall that I was going cherry picking this weekend, and of course I had to take a few photos while we were busy picking. It’s a challenge taking photos with sticky fingers while a gentle breeze keeps the cherry branches moving, so forgive the blur in the above photo! I’ll share more photos a bit later in this post. Let me share some other likes first.

I like my new tooth. A few of you know that at the end of May through July, I have spent quite a bit of time with my dentist. I lost two teeth due to extractions, but I gained a new crown. I’m so glad to be done with the major work. So many of you cheered me on, listened to me whine, and prayed for me, so thank you – from the bottom of my heart. My dentist, her assistant and my dental tech were outstanding in their care and patience.

A pretty planter - piecefulthoughts.com

I like beautiful flowers. While waiting for BigJ, I noticed this pretty planter. It is simply done, but the colors are so pretty, aren’t they?

Wandering a little ways down the walk from the planter, I spied this. It brought back so many memories of summer days spent on the school grounds of my little grade school.

Vintage Merry Go Round - piecefulthoughts.com

I recall swinging and spinning on this, the faster the better. Sometimes we’d climb up and stand on the handrail while holding on to those upright bars. That was a bold, daring move, and always impressive!

Seven buckets of cherries, one more to go - piecefulthoughts.com

I like picking cherries when the weather is beautiful and the trees are bountiful. We picked eight buckets – BigJ was finishing the last bucket when I took this photo. We started picking at 9:30 and all eight buckets were done by 11:30.

After the buckets are picked, we wash them and pick through them. Then they go through the pitter and are bagged up for the trip home.

All of the cherries have been processed into sauce and jam, and tucked away to last us the year.

Enjoying the lake view in Algoma, Wisconsin - piecefulthoughts.com

I like long water views. and here in the Midwest, the Great Lakes offer some of the best of those views. After our cherry picking and other errands, we sat and relaxed for a little while, enjoying this view.

Taking the long way home for the beautiful views - piecefulthoughts.com

I like taking the long way home, through backroads with beautiful views. This photo was taken from the car while we drove through a lovely winding road. All the greens were a feast for the eyes!

I hope you found this a likeable Thursday post. Maybe it’s inspired you to think about what you’ve enjoyed this week. If so, tell me about it – I’d love to hear!

I love your views that you have in Great Lake Country and the cherries remind me of Door Co WI. so many cherries!! make such lovely jam. the Merry Go Round is exactly as i remember from the old one room grade school that I went to for several years before they closed them all in the 60’s in the area I grew up in and we were all bused to “town” to go to the bigger schools. I have the best memories of that little school.

All great likes Wendy! Love love the views! Cherries are my favorite — when we visit hubby’s family in WI I like getting bottles of fruit wines from Door County, cherry and blackberry are my favorite — they are perfect for Summer evening dessert/relaxation! Glad your tooth woes are behind you!

Are those Montmorency cherries? I have a Montmorency cherry tree…the fruit is small this year due to the drought. It looks like you picked some beautiful fruit! Lucky you! 🙂

I’ll be going back to the dentist in a week to have a tooth cared for and a bridge replacement…not looking forward to it.

  • Vicki in MN

Wow that is a lot of cherries, I didn’t know that you got to have them pitted right there-wonderful! I am so glad you are all done and came through like a trooper at the dentist. I don’t think we ever had a swing like that.

Are those sweet or sour cherries? I’m ready for some pie!
I’m always astounded at the beautiful scenery in any of the Great Lakes states. For some reason I think of them as “flat”.
Boy I wish I could make pretty flower baskets like that. I see them at the nurseries and think I can do that myself, then I can’t find the plants to do it – I think they purposely don’t carry them. 😉
I’m glad your dental work is behind you – what a relief!

If I ever get to come to your area of the country, I want to come during cherry picking season. I want to pick way more cherries than I need then eat them fresh until I make myself nearly sick. Mmmmmmm!!!

And… as for that merry-go-round! What fun we had. But, you know, they don’t seem to make toys like that any more. True, we all knew a kid or two who broke their arm at recess, but gosh they were fun toys!

That’s a good list. Sometimes I think less is more with flowers. I have one that looks a little like that, mainly red petunias and a few little white jobs. It’s so pretty. Glad your dental work is done. The trouble with dental work is the cost, and then you don’t really have anything you can show off after spending such a pretty penny.

what did you do with the pits? I need cherry pits to make cold packs for my back!!! And I need cherries for eating!! How’s about making me a cherry pie? Wonder if it would make the trip from yours to Colorado? lol

A beautiful photo-filled post. Everything from the flower pot to the cherries to the swing to the fields made me smile. I’m sorry you had to spend so much time (and money) at the dentist…no fun. So wonderful that cherries get pitted at the picking place! I have a hand held pitter and it is really work to pit the cherries by hand. It is true those old merry-go-rounds were fun. There was one of the old metal ones at a nearby playground until 10 years ago Sorry to see them go. My Thursday smile is the time I’m spending with my 13 yr old grandson this summer. He’s trying to earn money for a computer upgrade and I have a list of chores we do together and get to visit at the same time. He is quite interesting and surprisingly willing to work!

So glad to hear all the dental work is over and went well. Never fun. Love seeing another one of our Great Lakes beautiful views. I haven’t got out to get any cherries yet, must do that along with fresh corn too! Such a wonderful time of year isn’t it..

Oh that is a lot of dental work, and it seems any type of doctor appointment whether medical, dental, vision is always a bit daunting with COVID. What kind of cherries are those? I am a fan of the Bing and when in Oregon, California, and Washington you can get them very cheap. Here they are expensive, but since I eat a lot of fruit I splurge. They are very good frozen too, but you have to deal with the pits. I agree I like the long way home too sometimes, back roads are the best.

Glad you’re getting through the dental work! That’s never fun, but has to be done. Look at all those cherries! You saw some neat sights on your cherry-picking trip. I love that water view, too. I wish I lived close enough to the Great Lakes to see them regularly.

  • quiltinggail

Good for you – surviving your dental work!!!
We didn’t get a lot of cherries from our tree … the crows and other things got them first! (Groan) But how fantastic to have a pitter! That would make it worth while for sure!

  • Carol Andrews

Yaaay for being done with the dental work! So many beautiful photos and your cherries! Oh My! I was thrilled when I was at the studio. A neighbor brought a couple of huge boxes of cherries over for us to enjoy. Such a sweet man and a lovely surprise! I love seeing your blue skies and peaceful view. Thank you for sharing your gratitudes today! 😉

  • Quilting is in my Blood

Those cherries look scrumptious and that view of the water spectacular! Glad your dental work went well. As far as what I’m thankful for is sleeping in clean sheets in my own bed after being gone for 10 days!

  • Kathleen McCormick

Glad all that dental work is done and those cherries are all picked, pitted and put away! What a few days you have had. I can’t believe that pitter! I don’t think I knew that – or every year I am amazed….

  • Jocelyn Thurston

What a pretty post with so many reds and those beautiful petunias too. We’ve been eating cherries lately but not as fresh as yours! I love them in season. Water views are always pretty. Yes to getting dental work done. Soon I’ll have to book a checkup. I guess Wilbs wouldn’t have been good at cherry picking!

  • Patricia Evans

What a time saver to have the pitting machine at the orchard. Makes processing those cherries much easier. Three cheers for being done with the dental work. Crowns are no fun.
