Almost A Friday Finish

I have almost a Friday Finish to show you today. My Moda Blockheads 2 quilt top is done. I’m so glad this top is finished. It’s been a long time coming – I started working on these blocks in July last year!

For this quilt, I used my stash of Kim Diehl and Jo Morton fabrics. The blocks came out weekly, and varied in size from 6 inches to 24 inches finished. I fell behind getting the blocks done and, for that reason, this project did not bring me much joy.

Quilt Block Tantrum

I made all of the blocks, with the exception of one. Block 51, the second to last block, was a 6 x 12 inch block (finished). Part of the block construction was 2-inch square in a square blocks. Without going into too much of the messy detail, suffice it to say that about three blocks into those, I tossed them in the trash (with authority) and substituted one of the other 6 x 12-inch blocks that was actually fun to construct. Sometimes you just have to do, what you have to do!

I snuck outside yesterday morning to try to take some photos. I have no floor space big enough to take photos of this quilt, and it’s too dark in my house on these rainy fall days. The photos outdoors weren’t cooperating much, either.

This is a photo on our damp deck, so I snapped it a bit quickly. I apologize for the blur. This is such a crazy quilt, no? I’ve been calling it my “Moda Chaos” quilt.

Here’s another shot, a little closer, so you can see some of the blocks together. The colors are very vibrant when you see them in person.

The finished quilt measures 72 x 78 inches. If I added borders, it could comfortably fit a queen bed. However, I think this will be finished as is.

What I Learned

I learned quite a bit about myself in the making of this quilt. I do not do well with quilt alongs that offer blocks of the week. It’s too easy for me to fall behind and catching up can be a challenge. This may be the last of a sampler type quilt that I make. All the different block designs together isn’t really my thing. Funny thing I learned – I’m stubborn. I was determined to finish this. I waivered at one point and thought I would just finish where I was at, but I just had to prove to myself I could finish it.

Finally a Friday Finish is linking up today with Tish and her UFO Busting Linky Party. I figure this has been a UFO in the works long enough to qualify. I’m also whooping it up with Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict and with Becca at Pretty Piney for TGIFF.

So proud of you to stick with it to the finish!! I know I wouldn’t have finished if I had done it. Now you have a bright quilt to snuggle with for our dreary days while reading a book or watching movies.

I’m with you. I have worked on a couple of sampler quilts and they aren’t really my thing either. I will be finishing up the summer sampler eventually….I’ve made 2 of the 20 blocks so far because I want to learn the techniques as I work on it….and I do like the quilters planner quilt along but quilt alongs that go week by week go a little too quickly for me as well.

This quilt is just beautiful–the color choices are just yummy–
I don’t do well with block-a-week or really most any QAL’s…just not for me…deadlines and i are not on speaking terms hahaha..

Well, I think that is beautiful, and say, “Yay for you getting it done!” I loved reading what you learned about yourself from making it. I would have had a hard time making a block each week, too – because those are complicated blocks! (The Tiny Tuesday blocks are tiny, so they’re usually doable!) Congratulations on your finished quilt top, Wendy!

Well, your quilt turned out so pretty. Love all that color. I’m with you about weekly blocks, although I’m still doing one this year. After doing the Solstice Challenge a couple of years ago, I swore off these complicated lots of HST sew-alongs. They are just too time-consuming. Also, I’m not doing any projects next year that require keeping up month by month or week by week. I want to finish off the many projects already waiting in the wings. The deadlines are starting to feel too onerous.

I think it’s bee-yoo-ti-ful!! I was never a scrappy/sampler quilt person but I love them more with each passing year. I think yours is perfect in these colors, too. I do agree with the BOM thing, though. I’m either motivated RIGHT NOW to make blocks, or I’ll just fall way behind. It’s good to know ourselves, right? 🙂

Hi Wendy! I love that you showed that block who IS boss. Throwing it away with authority and substituting a different block is a creative decision. And even better, no one but you will ever know. It sure turned out nicely! It looks nice on your deck with a few leaves scattered around. Nice posing!! ~smile~ Roseanne

Good for you … persevering! I probably would have given up long time ago! And then I’d be complaining that I had another UFO!!! Once you have this baby quilted, I bet you’ll fall in love with it!
It looks great amongst the fall leaves!
    Happy Quilting! 🙂

I’m with you, not a sampler quilt girl. I love the blocks individually, but together not so much. Nice finish!!

Its a great finish. I find my appreciate for samplers often happens as they age or I should say grow on me. I think it is terrific, but most especially your solution for the “nasty block”!

I love the name Moda Chaos! I love that you didn’t hesitate to give up on the block that was giving you trouble and that you know what works for you and what doesn’t. I’ve never been a block of the month/week kind of girl and don’t really do sampler quilts–and I feel like I’m in a minority by a lot on that!

I love these types of quilts! I get distracted by them too easily…sometimes they see finishes, sometimes they remain UFO status 🙁 Congrats on finishing the top! Maybe enough time will pass and you will do another one 🙂
