Dreaming of Ice Cream

I’m dreaming of ice cream as I write up this post, joining in with Not Afraid of Color and the others to share our Thursday thoughts. LeeAnna asked us to share our memories of our childhood and eating ice cream. One of my favorite memories of eating ice cream with my family was during the winter. We would often skate at night on a nearby pond – Dad would leave the car running and shine the headlights out on the pond so we could see. We would shovel paths through the snow on the pond and skate. I recall one Sunday afternoon, after skating at the pond with friends, our family packed off to their house and we made homemade ice cream, each of us kids taking a turn at cranking. I can still remember the taste of that ice cream – so good!

My current favorite ice cream is either Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food or New York Fudge Chunk. I talked about these ice cream cozies in a past Thursday post, and they get a lot of use. No, I don’t eat the entire pint in one sitting, I make it last!

Often we will pick up a Dilly bar at Dairy Queen while we go for an evening drive. This week, our air conditioning went out for a bit, so we took an evening drive to cool off in the truck. We were treated to this pretty sunset, enhanced by the smoke from the Canadian wildfires.

The flowers around our house are bursting with color. Isn’t the color of our patio hibiscus pretty? It’s been blooming like crazy. Our in-ground hibiscus is growing too, so I hope to see blooms on that later this season. I’ll share photos when it blooms!

We also have a bloom on that mystery plant in our front flower garden!

My phone tells me this is a Yellow Salsify or Goatsbeard. Seems a bit like a fancy dandelion! It only blooms for a short time each day, then closes up. If you have any information on this plant to share, let me know.

The Weekly Wilbs

Wilbs has been very helpful in the quilt room lately. I was pulling some possible fabrics for my challenge quilt. Wilbs thought he should be right in the middle of things, literally. He thinks the fabrics complement his furs so nicely!

Does Wilbs like ice cream? Yes – he is often dreaming of ice cream while we are eating it, nosing right in, trying to sneak a taste. He’s really not dreaming, but waiting until we get done with the bowl (vanilla, not chocolate) so he can sneak a few licks before it goes in the dishwasher!

Are you dreaming of ice cream now? What’s your favorite flavor? If you want to read more ice cream memories, pop over to Not Afraid of Color for the links to the others who post today.

How nice to have someone to treat the children with homemade icecream!!! I only remember to icecream in winter at christmas eve evening as desert, cinamon icecream with hot plum… icecream is here more a summer treat.
You little new hibiskus is coming out like that?? Wow!!!
I am a little jealous .. no companion like Wilbs when I sew. Love the picture.
Is it so dry that there are wildfires now nearby? Hope your aircondition is back again.
You inspired me to get some icecream in the next days as a treat.

We never get reliably safe ice to skate on here so your nighttime family outings sound very exciting to me. My mother used to make homemade ice cream, which was delicious, but only in the Summer.

Ice cream one of my favourite memories, my hubby always had a bowl of ice cream almost every night. The wildfires are causing poor air quality, today is supposed to be the worst.

Hand cranked ice cream memories are the best. I remember Mom would make the custard on the stove, let it cool, then Daddy cranked under a tree in our back yard with a bag of ice in a cooler and some rock salt. Nothing better. That yellow salsify is so interesting. I read that all parts of it are edible. There was even a recipe for salsify fritters – lol! Wilbs has such a cute face, he is pretty adorable. My kitties like to paw at my fabrics and knock them off the table. Maybe they don’t like my choices. 🙂

Your ice cream cosies seem like a great way to keep your hands clean while eating ice cream. Plus, I’ll bet the ice cream doesn’t melt as fast.

I’ve never heard of an ice cream cosy, but they make a lot of sense. Your favorite flavors sound awesome, I’ve had the Ben and Jerry’s and it is good.

  • Nancy @ Grace and Peace Quilting

Hmm, what flavor is Phish food? Not sure how they got that name. Moose Tracks for me. I’ve seen that flower/weed before, too. Kind of milky when you cut it off?

  • Diann@LittlePenguinQuilts

We did a lot of ice skating, too, growing up in Rochester, NY. My dad would flood the bottom of our yard and it would freeze and make a little ice skating rink. Wilbs deserves an ice cream treat after all his hard work snoop-ervising the quilting projects!

I love ice cream and admit to eating the whole container at times – what a pig I am! I usually wrap a dishtowel around the container – I will look and see how you made yours. no ice skating here unless the county makes a pond and keeps it frozen somehow – they used to do that now and then around Christmas but it must have been expensive to do as they stopped doing it. Lovely hibiscus.

You have fun memories! Thanks for sharing such sweet times. While growing up, we always had Schwann’s ice cream in our freezer, and my favorites were vanilla, Fresh Peach, and Fresh Strawberry. Oddly, I rarely choose chocolate ice cream. I prefer vanilla with hot fudge topping and brownie bites from Culvers or their fresh strawberry — and it’s in season now!

  • Brenda @ Songbird Designs

My favorite ice cream memories were during the summer growing up. My mom and aunt would make a huge batch of vanilla and cut up fresh peaches from our orchard to make it peach ice cream. My cousins and I would take turns both sitting on top of the machine and cranking the handle! Fun times. I’m not a huge fan of ice cream, but when I do eat it my favorite is just plain ole’ vanilla! Wilbs did a great job choosing those fabrics that complement his furry little self! LOL I hope your air quality doesn’t get too bad and that you got your AC repaired. No AC in summer is NOT a fun thing!

I thought fancy dandelion also! We used to make homemade ice cream on the farm too, never ice skated tho’. I love the extreme chocolate blizzard from Dairy Queen.

Flavors vary according to my whims & fancies…lately it’s been more a texture thing. My fav go-to at the moment is Tillamook Vanilla (French custard-like) with melty hot fudge sauce (quality brand only!) swimming in the newly melted creamy, thick, strongly vanilla ice cream…Oh, Lordy…
    Yum!

  • Sara Fridley

We made homemade ice cream quite often when our kids were growing up. I can still picture that old electric ice cream makers sitting on the steps to the porch. The kids would gather around to watch it and hoping to be the one who got to lick the paddles when it was done.

Death by Chocolate, Moose Tracks, anything CHOCOLATE! Though in December it is Peppermint Stick Ice Cream – Baskin Robbins used to have the most delicious pink Peppermint Stick ice cream with bits of candy cane in it. Add some chocolate syrup and it’s to die for!! Beautiful flowers and Wilbs is really sending you a message about your fabric choices!

  • Susan Salo

Here in SE Michigan the big treat was Sanders Brand Hot Fudge Topping. As a treat either my mom or grandma would take us to the local five-and-dime for a Hot fudge vanilla cream puff. Sooo good! Now I enjoy many flavors- peppermint ice cream in December, any Breyer’s flavor, ice cream with pecans.

  • Laura

Great post! Like Diann…my Dad also flooded the back yard and make an ice skating rink…so fun! I am intrigued by your challenge fabric. Wilbs seems to be leading you away from grunge! 🙂

  • Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl

Milk is a trigger for migraine headaches for me, so I’ve been thrilled with all of the alternative ice cream options coming onto the market in the past few years. Right now I am loving Ben and Jerry’s “Tonight Dough” non-dairy (almond milk based) ice cream. It’s such a treat to be able to enjoy it again!!

  • Kathleen McCormick

Love the memories of skating and homemade ice cream. I did think that flower looked like a dandelion dressed up to go out! I love almost nay kind of ice cream. I had some talenti vanilla the other day….so good!

  • The Joyful Quilter

Gorgeous sunset and flower photos, Wendy! I had to look up those ice cream flavors, as I’m not much of a Ben and Jerry’s girl. NY Chunk? OMG!!! That’s going on my MUST TRY list, for sure.

  • Sally

Ooh – ice cream cozies – I’ve never thought of that before. I have good memories of home made ice cream, too. I love hibiscus – it’s been many years since I’ve had one. Such pretty eyes, Wilbur!

  • Sandi Scarlett

Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food is my favorite also. In fact, I had some tonight. I enjoy your Blog and all your projects.

Three things today: First, it strikes me as so funny that you’d so casually remember skating on a pond in winter. One of the first things we’re taught as little kids is to never ever ever try to walk out on a frozen pond. Down here, the ice never gets thick enough and too many drownings happen. Second, well, of course Wilbs lay down on the fabrics that you obviously put out for him. Third, those flowers!!! Somebody should definitely paint those! 😉

  • rl2b2017

What a beautiful hibiscus! Our is growing, finally. I checked back on last year’s photos and mid-July is when I had huge blossoms opening. I’d expect the same this year – I hope! Aww, Wilbs. You brighten my day. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

ha! sneak a few licks? ice cream bowls are so clean after Milo they could be mistaken for just out of the dishwasher! Love your photos, never saw that flower before but it’s so dramatic! LeeAnna

  • Jocelyn Thurston

I so enjoyed your memory of ice cream, Wendy. So beautiful and how neat that it is a winter background. I also like your present day outing involving ice cream Your flowers are all beauties. Make no wonder you create such special quilts with a sewing room helper like Wilbs. That’s what I’ve been missing. Ned just groans and lies about.
