Eva’s SAHRR

I have a photo of Eva’s SAHRR to share with you today. While Eva has not been able to completely finish her quilt, her top is done, and I know you want to see it.

Those of you who have been following along will remember that Eva’s SAHRR is created as a reminder to her of a trip she and her husband took to South Africa. Each border idea she used as well as the fabrics have significance to that trip, which I’ll share with you from Eva.

An improv round robin quilt with various colorful borders of stars, dashes and pinwheels - piecefulthoughts.com

I told Eva she “knocked it out of the park” – isn’t it fantastic?!

Here’s a description of the quilt, so you can understand the significance of the placement of the borders, the colors and the blocks:

  • The Lappa is the house (center block)
  • The spools represent the drums that would call them to their evening meals
  • The hourglass blocks and the squares are the “mother earth“ reflecting the red earth of Africa
  • The star blocks for the stars shining in the night
  • The cheetah with her youngsters – the turquoise square blocks, lower right
  • The flying zebras (sorry flying geese!)
  • And a fancy African fabric special border – to highlight the warm colors of Africa
  • The pinwheel blocks represent the African Weaver bird
  • And last not least ..Eva’s favorite…. and it comes out  so perfect on black…. the purple blockhouse showing the purple blossoms of the Jacaranda tree.

Some of you might remember a giraffe border, and wondering where that went? Eva is rethinking that border, and the giraffe may very well end up on the back of the quilt because she wanted to get the top done while she’s thinking about how to redo the giraffe border to her liking. Eva’s finished top measures 53″ x 60″.

I just remembered that Eva shared a quick tutorial on that flying geese border, and I realized I haven’t posted that. I’ll try to do that soon!

Eva said she came up with a motto for herself as she worked on the quilt. This is her first SAHRR, and she said she had watched before but never been brave enough to join in. Her motto for herself was “Courage to start – Strength to endure – Resolve to finish”, saying “it took all my courage to participate; I worked focused each week, not knowing what would come; and I had the energy to finish.”

Thank you all for cheering Eva on as she worked on her quilt. I know she appreciates it and you’ve given her so much confidence in her quilting.

I’ll have one more post to share soon – Katherine is finishing up her quilt too, and I’m eager to share that with you as well, so stay tuned!

Thanks for taking the time to see Eva’s SAHRR finish!

Eva’s resolve and motto make me ashamed of my whining about mine – lol! What a glorious quilt – and the meaning behind each element just makes it more special. My favorite is the purple Jacaranda blooms.

Hi Wendy and Eva! I have to agree with you that Eva knocked this out of the park. I am especially drawn to the turquoise stars and those little purple blockhouses. It’s really a stunning piece and it’s so fun to learn the back story behind the fabrics and blocks. Great job! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Congratulations to Eva on her quilt. What a lovely remembrance of her trip to Africa. The special fabrics and the theme she chose make this a wonderful quilt. I hope to see the back of her quilt when she gets that completed.

I love Eva’s quilt top. It will be fun to see this all completed and to see her tutorial, too (the 22nd is coming up). I hope the giraffe block does wind up on the back. It really is a fabulous remembrance of her trip to Africa.

Hello Wendy, thank you very much for sharing of Eva’s Quilt and the explanation about it.

Hello Eva, your Sahrr it is very nice. I love it. Congratulation. 🙂

Her block is so interesting to look at. The color choices and placement are creative. Eva adding a story about why she made her choices is appreciated. It adds an extra layer of depth to her quilt.
Congratulations Eva, it is a nice quilt.

I really enjoyed reading about Eva’s quilt and memories of South Africa. This is a lovely memento of the trip! My husband and I visited Cape Town, South Africa, a long time ago, and this definitely has the colors of Africa.

Eva – your quilt is spectacular. It is just beautiful. I love your modern take on each of the different suggested blocks. You did incredible work mixing blocks into the various borders. I just love it.

Will you quilt this yourself or have it done by a long arm quilter?

How long ago was your trip to Africa? I noticed the giraffe on the bedside table – are those a memento from your trip? It has been so nice to get to know you through Wendy and this event.
