Follow the Dots Finish

I have my Follow the Dots finish to show you today. I was up early and the sun was shining, so I quickly snapped a few photos and decided to write the post today, rather than tomorrow.

Follow the Dots is my quilt for the Follow Your Own Path sew along hosted by the lovely Sandra of mmm!Quilts. What a fun pattern with an easy, relaxed pace for the sew along. Sandra will be hosting a parade of FYOP quilts tomorrow, so be sure to pop over to mmm!Quilts tomorrow and see all the lovelies!

When this sew along began, I thought I would just cheer everyone on from the sidelines, although I thought the pattern was so clever. Then one day I spied two red fabrics in my stash that would go together, followed by three other fabric duos that would work. Just like that, I was sewing up arrows.

In fact, I had so much fun sewing the arrows, that I completely messed up my plan of following the pattern, having the arrows going in different directions. I even reminded myself while working on them, that the next sets should be going the other way, then merrily sewed them, all facing the same direction. Haha – no worries, it’s all good!

Notice that I also had a little bit of fun while adding the inner border. Those little HSTs are left over from all the arrows, so I snuck a few into the inner borders.

You can see the dotted background fabric in this photo, which is where the name Follow the Dots came from. In the header photo, you can see that those dots are multi-colored and a perfect backdrop for those bright arrows.

I found this bright, vibrant backing at SR Harris on a recent shopping day with Vicki (Vicki’s Crafts and Quilting). She suggested I use it for the binding, too – it worked so well!

Connie was kind enough to sneak this quilt in and get it quilted for me lickety-split. I’m so grateful! Look at the fantastic quilt design – she thought it would work well with the Follow the Dots theme.

I also want to thank Sandra for coming up with such a great pattern and fun sew along! I think I have participated in 3, maybe 4, of Sandra’s QALs. I am completely embarrassed to admit that this is the first of them that I have actually gotten completely finished. The others are UFOs patiently waiting – ack!

Anyway, here’s one last look at my Follow the Dots finish. You’ll be seeing this linked up to Sandra’s quilt parade linky party tomorrow.

My quilt finished at 46″ x 50″ and all the fabrics, except for the recently purchased backing, are from my stash.

Happy Monday, all!

Ohhh, those additional mini HSTs are the cutest!!! Wonderful finish, Wendy! I look forward to seeing more on the link up! And I adore your little squirrel guy!!!

What a cute quilt and those extra HSTs in the border are the perfect zing to bring everything together. Great photos!

Just a happy quilt, Wendy. I love the background fabric and the bright arrows stand out so well against it and yet it so much better than a solid black. The way you upped the ante on the inside border with those little triangles is fantastic. (I threw mine away!) I’m looking forward to the parade of quilts tomorrow.

Follow the Dots is beautiful, Wendy! So glad you joined in with the QAL! I love the background fabric you used and the fun bright fabrics for the arrows, too. Using the leftover HSTs in the border was inspired! I wondered if you were going to do that when you mentioned that you had an idea for them. Congratulations on such a great finish!

Great inner border – I saw that right away! I just can’t let those HST cutoffs go to waste and now I have another way to reuse them – thanks for the inspiration.

Beautiful, Wendy! Love the black dot background!! And I absolutely LOVE what you did with the bonus HST’s in the inner border!! Such a fun quilt!

Hi Wendy! LOVE this finish. And that backing is just perfect-o for this project and the binding. Aren’t you just so clever using those little triangles in the inner border?!! And they look so dang cute, too. Connie did a great job quilting this – all the circles look just perfect. I am looking forward to tomorrow parade! ~smile~ Roseanne

Was the inner border part of the pattern or your idea? Whatever it is, those HSTs and the way you did the colors are wonderful! Nicely done. 😊

  • Needle and Foot

Well, shoot – I can’t think of anything new to say. The other commenters are all correct! The happy colors, the adorable bonus HST’s, the striped binding/backing and creative pattern all make for a really cool quilt!!

  • Vicki in MN

I love that we found the perfect batting when we got together! How clever you were on that fun border not to have just thrown those little HST pieces away, I really like that!

  • Sandra Walker

Yay for shopping with friends, specifically Vicki! That is a great idea to use the same fabric for the binding, too but OH MY HEART I love what you did with the cut off triangles from the HSTs!! And I also love Connie’s quilting design – she’s the best! The only thing this quilt needs is Wilbs on it. 😉 Thank you SO MUCH for joining in again this year, and for the previous years too; it means so much to me.

What a creative border treatment! And the backing and border are great also! I like the dotted background fabric. So I guess I just really like your quilt! Well done, Wendy!

Love your version & what a clever idea for those little leftovers. Well done on achieving a finish on this one and I too love Sandra’s designs. Take care & hugs.
