Freedom Quilt

Earlier this year, I received fabric from HeartSong Quilts in Hot Springs, SD. The shop would give fabric to quilters who wanted to make a Freedom Quilt, a quilt that would be given to a person rescued from human trafficking. Shortly after I received my packet of fabric, HeartSong Quilts, along with the owner’s residence, was completely destroyed by fire, which also destroyed other businesses in the same area.

Although the quilt shop has now permanently closed, they are still collecting Freedom Quilts. The only difference is that they no longer have fabric bundles to send out. Here are the fabrics I received:

The bundle included all the fabric needed for making a top, the backing and the binding. I could use my own design, or use one that is suggested in the directions that come with the fabric, which is what I chose to do.

The quilts are to measure approximately 60″ x 70″. I chose to cut my fabric into 9;5″ x 14.5″ rectangles and put them into a simple layout. Once that was done, I brought the top and the backing to Connie, and she added some pretty quilting.

Here’s a close up of the quilting design:

The floral quilting design works so well with the lovely floral print in the fabrics.

The back of the quilt is a pretty rose fabric, and the binding is the blue fabric you see in the photo above.

If you are interested in donating a quilt, the quilt must be completely finished and be in the size range of 60″ x 70″. Send an email to brian@heartsongquilts.com for more information and for a mailing address. There is still a need for quilts, so if you would like to donate a quilt, it would be appreciated.

What a lovely quilt and for such a worthy cause. You’re right that the flower quilting motif looks perfect with the floral print. I saved this post as I would like to make a quilt in the future for this project. Have a great day, Mary.

Beautiful, Wendy! Beautiful, simple quilt, beautiful quilting and beautiful cause. Thanks for making that quilt! I’m so sorry about their shop burning down. It’s seems like they’re entrepreneurship is strong enough to keep them going.

Hi Wendy! What a beautiful quilt but how horrible that the shop and residence burned down. What a wonderful cause. The fabrics are pretty and the flowered quilting really adds a special touch. I am certain that someone will feel all the love you stitched into this piece. Thank you, also, for sharing the email address. I will reach out to Brian. ~smile~ Roseanne

I was thinking as Roseanne said – that is the worst of luck for the shop and residence to burn down – it is a nice quilt and someone is going to love it

Oh how sad to loose both their home and business all in one shot. Glad you received your fabric and made a pretty floral quilt to give comfort to someone in need.

That is a pretty bundle of fabric and made a beautiful quilt, Wendy! I love a simple design like that – it’s perfect for a comfort quilt. So many places and needs for quilts to go to right now. We’ve visited Hot Springs and really enjoyed it there, so I was sorry to hear they lost their home and the quilt shop in a fire.

Wendy thanks for sharing. Their loss is sad. I need to measure my granny square quilt it may be a perfect fit.

I’m so sorry to hear about the devastating fire they suffered. I had not heard of this project before. My sister and I are making quilts for our grandniece’s non-profit, GloryB. Our niece is a survivor of years of horrible abuses by adopted parents and various foster placements after being “rescued” from the adoptive parents. She is a survivor of human trafficking, and her non-profit’s mission to aid and support other survivors of those same abuses she suffered. She doesn’t use the term “victim” because they are still here surviving. I plan to include the words “Surviving and Thriving” on the quilt labels. Thank you for continuing to support their program.

Such a happy/sad tale. I feel for the quilt shop and any other victims of the fire. that is just awful. Isn’t it great how many ways quilts are used to support others? This one is so pretty and soothing. It will bring comfort to whomever receives it.

What a great cause! Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Your quilt is lovely; pretty fabrics and sweet quilting. I’m sure it will comfort someone coming through a terrible experience and out the other side. Very sad about the shop, though.

Beautiful quilt Wendy. Another very good but very sad and wrong reason. I love those fabrics! Also sad is the fire, how life can change in an instant….
