Pieceful Life

It’s Thursday!

It’s Thursday! Wilbs and I are gettin’ all spiffed up and ready to join in with LeeAnna over at Not Afraid of Color and the rest of the I Like Thursday gang. You can find all of us listed over at LeeAnna’s blog, so feel free to visit us and leave some encouragement!

Last week, I missed posting because my website was having some issues. It’s back up and working, so I’ll catch up a bit in this post.

While we’re talking about blog issues, if any of you have had problems leaving comments on my blog, would you please send an email to piecefulthoughts@gmail.com and let me know? I know a few of you were last week, so I’m hoping it’s working now.

Summer Travels

Last week’s theme was summer travels – where do you usually go in the summer? We don’t really go to the same place each summer. We usually try to go on some short day trips and weekend trips to explore new places.

One destination that has become a regular for us in the last few years is cherry picking in Door County. You’ve heard me chatter about that in my posts; if not, you can catch up with this post. Today, you get to see a rare sighting – a photo of me! I don’t like having my photo taken, so I am usually behind the camera.

This was the second year we picked; this year was our fourth. In the photo, I have a cord with a carabiner tied around my waist. The bucket is clipped to the carabiner for hands-free picking. It works really well!

Happenings in the Quilt Room

In my ongoing quest to settle on something for the upcoming Queen of Gadgets Blog Hop, I fiddled around with some orphan HSTs that were stuffed in a bag. I came up with these two 12.5″ blocks.

These aren’t Hop-worthy either, but they were fun to make. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them now. The funny thing, I cannot recall what past quilt project these triangles are from! Anyway, I’ll let them hang out on the design wall while I ponder.

Today’s Theme – School Supplies!

As I drove into town Wednesday morning, the air was redolent with the aroma of maple and brown sugar. The Post plant (formerly Malt-O-Meal) was busy with cereal production of some sort. When the plant was owned by Malt-O-Meal, some days the air smelled like chocolate.

Anyway, I realized that suddenly our little town was bursting with new college students. The aisles at Target were busier, and school supplies were on sale. I bought some new gel pens (Pilot G2, I think?) and a new little stack of sticky notes – in bright colors, of course!

As a kid, I couldn’t wait to buy a new box of crayons. I still love the look (and the smell) of new crayons. Now that I’m older, I like to use colored pencils. My current pencils are looking a little used and worn – I’m trying to resist buying a new set!

It’s difficult to see, but there is a silver pencil on the right that is not sharpened to a point. It has been chewed to a mess. Any guesses on who has been doing that? (It’s not me.) No worries, though, the pencils are not toxic to cats. He stops by now and then for a nibble.

In my sewing room, I have my micron pen along with my Sew Fine pencils (no affiliation) for marking my fabrics.

My scissor stash - piecefulthoughts.com

For as long as I can remember, I have liked scissors. I hunt for unique and fun ones. Is a scissor stash a thing?

Take me to an art store or an office supply store, and it’s almost as dangerous as a fabric store! I love to shop for pens, pencils and paper. Or fun paperclips, magnets . . . “bouquets of sharpened pencils” – you get a gold star if you can name the movie that phrase came from!

Wilbs’ favorite school supply are pens that he can knock off the counter, or those tasty colored pencils. After all that fun, though, chasing that pen and messing up that rug, it’s time for a nap in the sun.

It’s Thursday and the first day of a new month! Yay for fall and school supplies! Do you have a favorite school supply from your school days? I’d love to hear about it!

You’ve Got Mail!! As a teacher, I love school supplies too. I once had a friend give me a bouquet of pencils for the start of the school year. We may have watched the movie together a few times 😉

  • Karen

I always love Door county but never went cherry picking – here I never hear of cherry picking so that must not be something done here. Love all you small scissors – I have them all over the place and wonder just how many I have now

  • texasquiltgal

I also still love the smell of new school supplies. Love your Stash ‘n Stores, now I’m on the hunt for some. Wilbs and Jack must be cousins on the chewing. Jack chewed off the end of one of my cushioned crochet hooks, and he loves to grab my pens. My granddaughters think I’m part psycho because I collect scissors too – lol!

Happy Thursday to you, Wendy. I too have a weakness for stationery items. I don’t know which movie the phrase comes from, but if someone gave me a bouquet of sharpened pencils I would be over the moon!

  • TerryK

What is it about a new box of crayons? Two of my granddaughters played a short amount of time with them and moved quickly to colored pencils which I enjoy too and mine are entering the short span of their life! I hope you figure out your blog hop project soon!

  • Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl

I loved the smell of a new box of crayons as well. Such a treat! Now I have to admit that a good notebook is what I’m always searching for. School supplies are enticing, and it’s funny to see that Wilbur agrees. Cherry picking looks fun and definitely has a sweet reward associated with it, doesn’t it? How do you like to use all the cherries you pick?

  • Needle and Foot

Yum – cherry picking!! Except for the part where you then have to pit all of them….
I have always loved the look and the prospects of a new box of crayons. It is like a new stack of fabric – so much potential! School supplies are the best. Kind of funny because I didn’t really like school all that much.

  • Rochelle Summers

I love when school supplies go on sale! I love the choices of project folders in multiple colors, especially with pockets. And I love the packs of pencils I don’t have to sharpen. I once bought a very large box of crayons because I never had those as a child – only the 8 pack. Wilbs is so flexible there washing that leg.

Love the owl container, Wendy! Oh yes, I have both colored pencils and color crayons…love the smell! My granddaughter used the pencils and a sketch pad just last week when she stayed over. I was happy to see that, as she is a high schooler now…she didn’t spend all of her time on the cell phone! 🙂

  • LA Paylor

only the silver one… hmmmm as a psychology major that’s vewwwwy interwesting….
Forgot about loving fun post it’s…. wilbur is my kind of cat. Now cherries…. send me the pits please. I was cleaning my latest pits when they accidentally got moldy since I covered them in water it dried up and anyway… threw them out. I use the pits for pain packs for the freezer for my back and eyes during migraines

You look like you’re a cherry picking expert in that photo, Wendy! The cherries also look so appealing – pretty bright red. Are they sweet cherries? I love sticky notes – when I was teaching I used them for everything, and always had them stuck everywhere! Wilbur looks like he can get comfy and nap just about anywhere!

  • laura bruno lilly

Thank you for giving us your followers a peek at you in your cherry picking garb! Love that pail attachment ‘gadget’ for hands free picking! And back-to-school sales are a great excuse to buy school/office supplies – whether needed or not! HA!

  • Nancy @ Grace and Peace Quilting

Hi Wendy!!! I think my fav back-to-school thing was getting some new fabric and sewing a new outfit for the first day! Love your scissor collection!!!

  • quiltinggail

Nothing wrong with having a scissor stash! What I find amazing is that they are all in one place! I might have a bit of a scissor stash myself – but it’s like my seam ripper(S) … I can’t find them when I need them!

And Wilbs knows best! A nap in the sun! 🙂

  • exuberantcolor/Wanda Hanson

My favorite school/office supply item is graph paper. I remember the day the teacher (probably 5th grade) gave us construction paper with 1″ grid on it and said draw whatever we wanted on it. I was over the moon happy. I have always loved geometric shapes and am always drawing out quilt blocks on it. I was really excited when I found yellow and pink graph paper at a community college shop.

I do like embroidery scissors it has to be said. And yes stationery shopping is as much fun as yarn and fabric shopping. I needed a new file this week, and had great fun finding the right one.

  • nanamickie

I hadn’t thought of a scissors stash but we all seem to have enough of them! Weirdly, my favorite scissors are children’s fingernail scissors with the blunt edges. I use them regularly when I am doing hand work and my fabric never gets cut by mistake. Wilbs is looking particularly handsome and I think it is hilarious that he chews your pencil! That star block is so pretty! I love it! Have a great weekend Wendy!

  • The Morning Latte

I’m still getting used to NOT being part of school supply sales–I think I enjoy that I can go only if I want to! Never thought about collecting scissors–what a cute idea! And I love your little owl pencil holder! Enjoy the sun Wilbs!

  • Sally

Hands free picking is the best! (I have the blueberry bucket hung from string around my neck.) I love colorful sticky notes. And gel pens have such a nice feel. Good stuff all around! Wilbur makes for a handsome door stop. LOL

  • jaybirdinohio

What size Micron pen do you use? I’m starting a new stitching project, and after trying to trace the design with a pencil, I realize I need a fine pen. Any suggestions?

  • Kathleen McCormick

Love the first pic of Wilbs! I love stationery stores, too, and it can be just as bad as a fabric store. I like those blocks…I could see tote bags or placemats out of them. Could also be a table topper. You could emphase more of the b&w (if I am seeing the colors correctly) if you don’t want it so pink and purple. Lots of options with those blocks!

  • Quilting is in my Blood

Scissor stash—hilarious! And it does look like you have one! That Wilbs and his silver pencil chewing! He is quite the busy boy! Those cherries look delicious, and it’s always nice to see a glimpse of you!

  • Jocelyn Thurston

Glad to know it’s not you chewing your pencils! Around here we have a culprit that loves pencils too. Lots of great news in this one…I remember your cherry picking last year and how neat to see the picker with all the doohickies(Sp?) at work there. Love fresh cherries! I have a full set of Micron pens and use them for transferring embroidery patterns onto cloth. The lines are so thin they can be covered by embroidery floss. Hope this comment works…don’t think last weeks did.

  • The Joyful Quilter

Wow! That’s some scissor stash, Wendy!! My favorite school supply is currently glue sticks. I bought a dozen of them last month. I’ve been going through them like water with the art journaling that I’ve been doing!!
