Masala Box Quilt

I’m so excited to share my version of the Masala Box Quilt, a newly released pattern by Sew Preeti Quilts. When Preeti asked if I would like to make the quilt, I was delighted. I’m happy to share this with you today and there’s a little giveaway at the end of this post – so stick with me!

My version of the Masala Box Quilt, a new pattern by Sew Preeti Quilts - piecefulthoughts.com

As you can see, I fell into the crayon box again with this quilt. I had so much fun choosing the fabrics, and all of them – with the exception of the backing – came from my stash. That’s worth a happy dance, right?!

Speaking of dancing, don’t you love the way those boxes dance on this quilt? It’s such a happy design. For my quilt, I chose a deep purple background. I’m not sure where I picked up this deep purple, but it’s very close to Kona Deep Violet. From there, I just chose fabrics from my stash that popped against the background.

Here are a few more fabric combinations I considered:

  • Patterned white background (think Libs Elliot) with bright solids
  • Black background with graphic grays and whites
  • And yes, I did consider my ever favorite Kona Pickle for a background, too

My friends Bernie and Mari also made the Masala Box pattern. You can see their quilts here and here

I think we all have go-to patterns for those times when we need a quick quilt for a gift, to donate, or for those times when we just need to quilt something to rev up our sewing mojo. This pattern is one of those that needs to be in your repertoire of fun, quick quilts. The pattern is written for three sizes – baby, lap and queen.

My quilt is lap size and measures 60 inches square. I had the entire quilt top completed, including the quilting, in about 2 days, mostly sewing in the afternoon. It seriously is that quick and, I might add – really a joy to make.

Quilt top done, I buzzed up to my local JoAnn’s and found this cuddly, soft flannel with colors that matched the top so well! After the flannel was washed, I brought the bundle to Connie so she could work her longarm magic. She always knows just the right design!

Now it kinda feels like Christmas when all the gifts have been unwrapped and there’s no more surprises, since I’ve been so excited to share this reveal with you.

But Wait! There’s a Giveaway!

There’s one more gift hidden there under the tree – and this is my first giveaway ever here at Pieceful Thoughts (happy dancing again)! So, if you would like to be entered in the drawing to win a copy of Preeti’s Masala Box Quilt pattern, leave a comment and tell me which quilt size – baby, lap or queen – is your favorite and why. Wendy… your Masala Box Quilt is beautiful! Love the colors, and yes, I can see so many different color options for that pattern! And I like lap quilts! I always love reading your posts and seeing all the fun things you get done. I’m working on a big quilt by A Wing & A Prayer! (Moonlight Sonata) It is coming along. Just a big project. Thanks again for keeping us posted!

  • Tracie

The colors you chose are stunning together! I also liked reading your other ideas, and I’m glad “pickle” was an option. I can’t believe you pieced it so fast! That’s impressive for a lap quilt, which is my favorite size. I’d like to make it with a chambray background and flannel back.

I didn’t think I would like that pattern, but yours convinced me I need to make it . I love the colored background . I make queen size as that is what fits most of my kids beds . Thank you .

It must be the beginning of ‘giveaway season’ in blogland! I just revealed who won a freebie on my blog in today’s post and here you announced the pattern giveaway…
    Funny, that.
    🙂
Regardless of whether or not I’m the lucky winner of this pattern giveaway, I think it’s the perfect answer to my nagging question of what pattern to use for a queen sized quilt I’m wanting to make for my son and almost-daughter-in-law. Both love graphic design and ***I like*** working with scraps so this is perfect for that and your assertion that it’s EASY tips my choice over the the line! I don’t do queen sizes much anymore because they take soooo long and it stymies my fun in dabbling in other projects – HA! But this one looks promising.
But then, I’m a sucker for anything purple!

Hi Wendy! What a fun and happy quilt! I love the bright colors and the purple background really sets it off! My favorite size quilts are lap sized as I make a lot of charity quilts (last year I made 90 lap size for our local hospital and hospice facility) and I would love a copy of this pattern to help use up some of my scraps! Thanks for sharing – I enjoy your blog!

  • Sandi Scarlett

I love your quilt and wouldn’t have thought about a purple background. I always made large quilts but I do most of my quilting on my dsm and it’s very hard so now I’m doing lap or twin size for donation quilts.

  • Donna Clark

Your bright beautiful quilt jumped out at me and made me immediately think of a baby quilt I should make for an upcoming grandchild!!! Love the pattern and your choice of colors 😊

  • Laura

What a great jewel box quilt, and easy, too! What’s not to like? I sure wouldn’t mind being all snuggly under a lap size quilt while sipping tea and reading a good book! 🙂

  • The Joyful Quilter

Your quilt is quite a stunner, Wendy! Love, love, LOVE your bold background choice!! It made such a vibrant version of Preeti’s pattern. I’ve added your link to my Masala Box post for the (informal) Blog Hop, so that my readers can get a completely different take on the quilt.

  • Malinda

That’s a beautiful quilt! I like making baby size. They are big enough to have fun with fabrics and blocks, useful, and are small enough to finish fast! And bonus points if their backing doesn’t have to be pieced! I’d love to win this pattern.

  • Brenda @ Songbird Designs

Your quilt is gorgeous!! I love the colors you chose and the pattern is great! The backing is perfect for this quilt and who doesn’t love soft, cuddly flannel?!! My favorite size to make is lap. They are quick to stitch up and quilt!! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  • Katherine Duquette

I always enjoy your color choices. This quilt looks so sparkly and bright with the jewel tones. Wilbs from your last be post looked so comfortable in his u turn position.

  • Cindy Berry

What a great quilt pattern and what a beautiful piece you’ve made with it….. love the cheery bright colors…. what a great find for the backing! I would love to win a copy. thanks for the opportunity and have a great weekend Wendy.

  • Kathleen McCormick

What a gorgeous version of this quilt! Love the brights against the magenta background and that flannel is just perfect. Hooray for getting it all done in no time at all! I love baby quilts, because I always have one at the ready, but one in a lap size with a flannel will surely be the lovelies thing to cuddle under by the fire!

  • Vicki in MN

You made a fun pattern into a great quilt! Love that purple background and it really does make the colors pop! I would LOVE to win this pattern! I would probably do baby and lap quilts for donations with it, using scraps up.

  • Laura M

I think I’d make a baby quilt with the Masala pattern. Sure like your purple background fabric. I’m going to use a coral colour in a future quilt. It is fun to see how different background colours make the other colours pop.

  • kaywelch

My favorite size to make is lap because it is a size that works for everyone – baby to adult. They are so versatile – babies/toddlers to drag around & play, use for picnics, or a snuggle quilt for every day. I am loving this new pattern which Your version is gorgeous – rich crayon box colors. I think would be a nice addition to the pattern file. thanks for offering this giveaway.

  • Mari

I love, love, love your vibrant, happy version of the quilt! The choice of fabrics really does make a huge difference in how the quilt looks, though they’re all the same pattern. And I agree, it was a really quick and satisfying make.

  • texasquiltgal

Love the colors you chose, and that backing is so perfect. I was at Joann’s yesterday picking out white flannel, of all things, for my design board. There was another lady in the aisle picking out the same thing for her design board! 😀 I need to go back and look at the pretty flannel like your used.

  • scottishmichelle

I love your version of masala box, so cheerful and colourful. I like making baby size quilts because they are easier to quilt on my domestic sewing machine, can be hung on the wall and give me the satisfaction of making a quilt – I’ve yet to actually give a quilt away – yes really!

  • Marly Rylaars

I love purple, and your quilt calls to me! I like the striking effect of this design in these colours. I would make the baby size because babies are always arriving so it’s good to have a few in stock. I suspect this pattern could be a good leader and ender project.

  • Rochelle Summers

Such a bright and cheerful quilt and if it goes together as easily as you say, certainly one I should try. I would probably do a lap size. Most of my quilts are for charity and a useful size for toddlers and for elders is the lap size.

  • thedarlingdogwood

This is so pretty, Wendy! (Pretty and Preeti 🙂 ) I adore the deep purple background! I made a baby size and just layered it tonight, hope to quilt it in the next few days. Now I really want to make one with a dark purple background, maybe with shades of blues in the masala boxes?

  • Darlene Crosby

Wow! Purple is my favorite color, and you lap size quilt is just perfect! That’s the size I would make too, and I would go out of my comfort zone and do it with a beautiful purple background! Thank you for a chance to win. 🤩
