Picnic Quilt 2

How about a lake view while I show you my Picnic Quilt 2 today? This is another photo of Lake Michigan from our cherry picking weekend. However, Picnic Quilt 2 didn’t come with us for the weekend. It was on its way to friends of ours as a wedding gift.

Some of you might recognize this quilt as one of the Monthly Color Challenge quilts from Patterns by Jen. You are right – this is my 2019 Monthly Color Challenge quilt, finally finshed.

I sent this quilt to the new couple with the request that they use it as a picnic quilt, take along quilt, stuff it in your car quilt – in other words, wear it out and take it on adventures.

Of course, Connie worked her magic with the quilting. I love way she combined straight lines and swirls!.

I don’t recall where I found this backing, but I thought it was a fun addition. For the binding I used strips of the background fabric.

The quilt finished at 60 inches square. It is the first of my monthly color challenge quilts.

Picnic Quilt 2 is the second of what I have dubbed my Picnic Quilts. I call them picnic quilts for a couple of reasons. It might be the size of the quilt – too big for a lap quilt, too small for a bed. It might also be the fabrics chosen for the quilt that gives it a festive, picnic vibe. I have more picnic quilts in my stack of UFOs, so you’ll be seeing more of them.

Small Finish 1

Before I go, I thought I’d share a couple of small finishes with you. This first one was a set of travel bags made as a graduation gift for a friend’s daughter.

Travel Cosmetic Bag, using the Stash and Dash pattern by Patterns by Annie - piecefulthoughts.com

The folded cosmetic bag is the Stash and Dash design from Patterns by Annie. The zippy pouch was made from the left over fabric. I pulled zippers from my stash – I only had three that were a close match!

Small Finish 2

My daughter asked if I could make her a small garbage holder for her car. She told me not to use cute fabric, since it was just for a garbage bag. So I pulled out this fat quarter that I didn’t know how else to use, and whipped up this quick bag. I didn’t take a photo of the inside of the bag, but it’s just lined with a white Grunge.

Here’s a closer photo so you can see the fabric. I thought it was perfect for this little bag.

This went together so quickly, I might even put a tutorial together. We’ll see!

So that’s my Picnic Quilt 2 and a little extra for you today. I hope you’ve enjoyed finally seeing a few finishes here at Pieceful Thoughts!

I’m linking up today with:

I love views of Lake Michigan reminds me so much of childhood. Now that my daughter no longer lives in Wisconsin and my aunt passed away a couple years ago I doubt I will go back as for vacations we prefer the mountains.

I love the picnic quilt and what a great idea – I may have to steal that idea. It’s another excuse to make a quilt! Your zippers are perfect for that travel bag, and the trash bag is “cute”!! 😀

You’re right…I did recognize those blocks. Turned out very cute. I like your little make-up bag too.

  • Vicki in MN

Great idea to tell them to use for a picnic quilt so they really use it! Love the zippered bag too.

I love how you finished off those color challenge blocks, Wendy! I’ve been struggling with what to do with mine, and I like that layout and how you used the background fabric. Perfect picnic quilt! You’ve had some other fun finishes, too! The fabric for your daughter’s trash bag is just great!

The picnic quilt is beautiful! What a great gift. And I never thought I’d say a garbage holder is cute, but it really is, the fabric you picked for it is spot on!

Love Picnic 2 and love the idea of a quilt to be used in the car or however but to be used! The trash bag is awesome and a tutorial would be terrrific!!!

I love the finish for the quilt. Those blocks look fantastic and the quilting is lovely. That letter of instruction to use it for everything, use it up, is great! So many of our quilts just don’t get enjoyed the way they should. Your other finishes are lovely. The turquoise and yellow just glow and I love the “trash” bag.

Beautiful view, quilt and quilting! I love that you let them know it’s to be USED! (I made a quilt for a sis a few years ago that I specifically put “picnic” in its name so its purpose would always be obvious.). That’s a great job on the cosmetic bag–wish I had more patience to make things like that because they’re great gifts. The “stash” delivered on the zippers AND the garbage bag!

  • Louise Hornor

Beautiful finish, Wendy! I’m so glad you told your friends to use it as a picnic quilt. It deserves to be used often and in public to spread its bright cheer 🙂

  • Carol Andrews

Your bags for the grad gift are beautiful! I’m sure they will be enjoyed and well travelled with the recipient. So much fun fabric and quilting in your Colour Challenge/picnic Quilt/ Wedding Gift! That little car garbage bag is just so much fun. Congrats on all the beautiful finishes.

Great finishes! Congratulations on the quilt finish, and the smaller projects are perfect. The colors for the case and bag are so pretty and the garbage bag is the perfect size for the car. The fabric is so cute!

  • Kathy Swallows

Very fun finishes. The picnic quilt is really perfect for a picnic. I hope your friends take your advice. It’s always fun to see that your quilts are in use, not stuck in a closet.
