Santa House

Santa House is my next holiday pillow for the 2022 holiday season. The block for the Santa House pillow is from the Rainbow Neighborhood pattern just released by Sandra of mmmQuilts. If you’ve made any of Sandra’s patterns, you know that she keeps them simple and quick. This fun little neighborhood comes together quickly, with 10 house blocks and some fun little additions. Sandra gives you four size options for this design. A pillow, a bench pillow, a throw, and a twin-size quilt. Along with that, there is plenty of room to play with the blocks to create your own combination, too. I’ll give you the skinny on how you can get the pattern at the end of this post. First, let’s look at Santa House.

I had so much fun pulling together the elements for this house block. The pattern lends itself well to fussy cutting, and the houses can be made with or without windows over the door. There are options for the quilt block in the house, too, so you can mix it up and create your own unique neighborhood.

I’ve had so much fun with this pillow, and I’ve been thinking about how versatile this pattern could be:

  • A personal BOM – with 10 house blocks and a few other secondary blocks, you could do one house block a month, then finish the other secondary units in the other two. A great way to use up scraps and have a complete quilt top by the end of the year.
  • In the throes of January (or maybe those humid days of summer), wouldn’t it be fun to make a quilt in icy winter blues? I can see frosty houses, hearts, and leaves!
  • Valentine’s Day – how about a little love in those houses – fussy cut hearts and fabrics – fun for either a small or large project!

The pillow finishes at 22-1/2 inches, a perfect size for a floor pillow or lounging on the sofa, or gracing a chair. All of the fabrics used for my pillow are from my stash, many from my scraps.

Santa House joins my other recent pillow, Geometric Reindeer. I think they look pretty good together!
