Pieceful Life

I Like Thursday 61

I Like Thursday 61 is my first ILT post of 2021. I’m joining in with LeeAnna and the others who participate in these weekly posts. All those who participate remind me to be grateful for the little things in these days of unrest in our country. Thank you, LeeAnna, for keeping this going.

I Like Thursdays 61 - My daughter with her first sewing machine and my husband having some fun with the photo - piecefulthoughts.com

I’ve enjoyed looking through old photos over the holidays. This particular photo is when my daughter got her sewing machine for a Christmas gift from her grandmother (my mom). It wasn’t until later that BigJ noticed the guy on the tv and added in a fun caption for the photo. Still makes me chuckle.

I Like Thursday 61 - A small tailor's clapper made for my by my husband - piecefulthoughts.com

I like this tailor’s clapper that BigJ made for me out of walnut. It’s just a small one, about 3″ x 4″ to use on my small blocks, and it works really well. If you’re not familiar with this tool, it’s very useful for pressing seam intersections. Press the iron on the seam to flatten, then lift the iron off and put the tailor’s clapper on that spot. You can just let it sit, or gently “tamp” it on the seam intersection. It helps flatten the seam.

I Like Thursdays 61 - Little traveling sewing case made for me by a friend - piecefulthoughts.com

I like this little travel sewing case made for me by Connie. Isn’t it cute? It’s magnetic so all the little notions stay in place. I can’t wait to bring it on a road trip. She also made the flatlay board you see undermeath the little sewing kit. Pretty cool, huh? It’s foam board covered in paper that looks like white-washed boards. She added another design on the other side – a darker woodgrain pattern. She also made a second board with marble on one side and white words on the other.

While hand stitching one evening, I watched Elizabeth is Missing on PBS. While the subject of the show is difficult (dementia and Alzheimer’s), Glenda Jackson’s performance was outstanding. The only other movie I’ve seen her in was Hopscotch – one of my favorite movies.

The Weekly Wilbs

Wilbs is introduced to the curious world of jigsaw puzzles. He was pretty sure he could help. Each Christmas, my brother and I give each other jigsaw puzzles – it has become a tiny bit of competition to see who can find the toughest puzzle. This year, I sent him a two-sided puzzle. He sent me this one, which has a bazillion pieces and the photo on the box isn’t necessarily the way the puzzle will look. Yes, the puzzle gets covered when we aren’t working on it so Wilbs will leave it alone.

That’s my I Like Thursday 61 post for this week. We are supposed to have a winter storm on the way, so by the time you are reading this, the snow may be flying here, and I’ll be in my sewing room.

Happy Thursday, all!

Wendy

Fun to see M then and now! The puzzle exchange is a great idea. We didn’t do a Christmas puzzle this year — yet. We’re hoping for a bunch of snow. The kitchen is stocked and we have books to read. Enjoy!

I would never be able to concentrate on a puzzle like that! I used to like them but haven’t in years and the only time I have done one is at a coffee shop (before covid) they would leave one laying out on a table and if you wished to try your luck you could sit and have your coffee and visit while working the puzzle. I’m assuming they no longer have it there in fact I think I saw that the shop was moving to a smaller location.

Love that photo of your beginner quilter! Haha–on the TV! What a neat clapper, made by BigJ! And so nice–4 different flat lay boards! Now you can use them with your flat lay photo box. (It’s not that tough to set up!) We have a puzzle going right now, too–it says 6 spots on the cover photo are different from the puzzle!?! Why do they do that to us!!!

That photo of your daughter with the caption is hilarious! Thank you for giving us another look at your gorgeous Moody Blues and Wilbur, all in one post. 🙂 That tailor’s clapper is pretty! Looks nice and smooth – not an easy achievement according to my husband. Not sure why you cover your puzzle – Wilbur could probably fit in a few pieces for you. 😉 By the way, what do you use to cover it?

Nice to see the photo of your daughter. The clapper is really helpful. I almost forgot mine, and I would have been made about it because I’m working on minis this trip. It was just an afterthought as I left the sewing room for the last time, but it got into my sewing box.

Hi Wendy! Ooooh, a two-sided puzzle. Now that sounds HARD. Of course, so does one that doesn’t match the picture on the box! Nothing like going in blind! I can see where Wilbs would be just a big fabulous helper with the puzzles. That traveling sewing case is pretty darn nifty. The talent to even come up with the idea amazes me. And BigJ has a hidden talent as well. I was just thinking about getting one of those. Happy Thursday to you. ~smile~ Roseanne

Wonderful post. Good to see Wilbs again. The puzzle looks fun. I have a point presser my FIL made me many years ago. I think I could use it as a clapper.

Cute photo of your daughter with her sewing machine and dad’s added caption! That sounds like quite the puzzle, and of course Wilbur needs to help. He needs to make sure you don’t ever forget he’s there! I wondered if “Elizabeth is Missing” would be an interesting show, but we didn’t watch it – now I wish we had!

Wendy it’s a great list today and sure made me smile. Your travel kit and clappers are such thoughtful beautiful gifts. I do hope Wilbs found a few pieces’ homes in the puzzle. It looks like a great one…..no picture of the puzzle?

I love to do jigsaw puzzles, but don’t have the space to leave one set up, so I do them online. Most 300 piece puzzles take me anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to finish. Just another wonderful time waster.

Lots of fun loves today – the picture of your daughter with the sewing machine and with the puzzle! I love that Wilbur is helping; I am not sure anyone working on the puzzle enjoys it…. The clapper looks marvelous – I am sure it will be a big help.

What a treasure to have a photo of your daughter at her sewing machine! I remember always having a puzzle on a card table when I was growing up. A two-sided one would drive me crazy as would one that didn’t have the exact picture on the box. I relied on that picture to be able to finish the puzzle. Such a fun tradition for you and your brother. Thank you for sharing your likes!

Great likes! Love the puzzle and you giving a double sided puzzle is just dastardly ingenious (I LOVE it!). Always good to see Wilbs and love the photo of your daughter sewing! Stay safe!

That clapper is a beauty! Love the walnut. I just got my first one earlier this year. I do like using it, but need to look for one slightly larger and square! A puzzle present is perfect. I can’t imagine doing a 2 sided one.
