Jacob’s Ladder Block

The Jacob’s Ladder block is the next block for the Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail sew along hosted by Melva Loves Scraps. Are you enjoying the book excerpts in Melva’s posts as much as I am? I enjoy seeing which excerpt Melva chooses for each block.

Jacob's Ladder block, my version of the next block for the Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail sew along hosted by Melva Loves Scraps - piecefulthoughts.com

There were no Minnesota or family connections for this block, so I chose fabrics to represent the scrub cedar (the stripe), the rivers (the grey/blue) and the desert sand. As with the other blocks, I enjoyed making this one.

Here’s another photo, a litte closer so you can see the fabrics colors a bit better.

I thought the pine needles on the sand fabric was a fun find! The Grunge fabric blends so well with the other two fabrics. I had just enough for this block, so it’s time to order more. I use this more than I thought I would. I meant to look up the name before I wrote this post but forgot. If you want to know, leave a comment, and I’ll find it for you.

You can see all of my blocks so far (except for this one) in this post

Have you made a Jacob’s Ladder block? Maybe you’ve made a whole quilt from that block? I’d love to hear!

I saw a whole quilt made from this block a couple of days ago, it was such a pretty pattern. Nice piecing on yours. I like your colors

Oh Wendy, I have made 4-patch blocks and I have made HSTs but never put them together for a Jacob’s Ladder Block. So many blocks and so little time. Must check Melva’s blog. Gosh, where would I be without you? Under a rock, for sure 😀

I never would have thought of using a stripe in this block, but it is wonderful and you got the strips all going the same direction!

Hi Wendy! What a striking block!! I think you do a fabulous job selecting your fabrics and placing them just perfectly. I have never made this block but I’ve wanted to make a whole quilt some day. You absolutely need to get more of that Grunge fabric – the whole line is so versatile. ~smile~ Roseanne

I love your block and the fabrics are wonderful! I have made a Jacobs Ladder block before. It was for a sample quilt, each month we made a different block. Hugs,

I love that block and the colors/pattern you used. A simple block but can be so striking depended on the color/pattern

When I read about the things that are represented by the chosen colors and fabrics and shapes, it reminds me how quilting and talking about quilts has changed over time. When my grandmothers quilted, the purpose was warmth in cold houses and making use of worn out or outgrown clothes scraps. The conversation was about finding the pieces that came from your shirt or dress and remembering wearing that particular quilt piece. Now that we have central heat, quilts are pieces of fabric art to be appreciated in a completely different way.

I love the Jacob’s Ladder block, and have thought about making a whole quilt of them. Your pine needle print is so pretty, and perfect for this block, too. I have to admit I haven’t been reading Melva’s posts, but I sure enjoy seeing what you’re making!

I just now caught up on Melva’s blocks and saw this post on her linky party. I love your beautiful fabrics on this block, and I love the block itself! We always need more Grunge don’t we?
Thanks for inspiring me to join this SAL. I am really enjoying it.
