SAHRR Border 5

It’s SAHRR Border 5 day today! This week, Quilting Gail is our host, and our border for this week is “Quilter’s Choice – Using 4“. Be sure you stop over and visit Gail and read her post about this border, but basically you have your choice of what you do, as long as it includes an amount of 4. So 4 blocks, 4 patch, 4 colors . . . get the idea? I expect that many of you will have lots of fun with this border, and I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Don’t forget to link up your borders over at Quilting Gail by the end of the week!

Eva’s SAHRR Progress

Eva has been hard at work on two big quilt projects. She has been keeping me up to date on how both of them are coming along. Today we get a full peek at Eva’s SAHRR quilt so far. She said it is large enough now that she lays it out on the floor. First she lays down a large piece of linen-like fabric, then lays out her SAHRR quilt on top of that fabric. When she’s done working on it, she rolls her SAHRR quilt up in the base fabric and sets it aside. When she’s ready to work on it again, she unrolls it and it’s all in place. Clever, huh? She said if she left it on the floor, then they would have to “fly over it” every time they wanted to cross the room! Haha.

For her square in a square blocks, she got a little encouragement from Kathleen to try wonky square in a square. So Eva decided to combine her love of making log cabin blocks and the square in a square block. Here’s a photo of her block in progress.

And here is her progress so far. You can see her square in a square blocks in each corner. She said she’ll need to get more turquoise fabric, and she may add some more square in a square blocks to the triangle border. Or maybe she will use today’s Quilter’s Choice – Using 4. We’ll have to wait and see what she decides!

Now you can see the print fabric in the background – that’s not part of her quilt, that’s the base fabric she places on the floor to lay the quilt out on. Eva also says she is keeping the pink fabric at a minimum because the family this quilt will go to wanted very little pink in the quilt. I like those little happy elephants!

My SAHRR Border 5

As you’ve been following my progress with my SAHRR, you know that I started with the center block made by my grandmother, and then in the first border I added names to my signature blocks for the four generation of sewing women – my grandmother, my mom, me and my daughter. For the third border, I added triangles made from an apron my mom used to wear. So now, with this border, I needed to add in something from my daughter. I asked her if she would like to make some blocks, and she thought that would be fun.

To make it easy for her, I decided 4-patch blocks were simple and quick to do. She had those blocks done in no time. Her she is (proof of her working on the border, but I should’ve taken a photo while she was sewing!) playing with layouts on the design wall.

We moved those blocks around, and made a few more. Then she headed home for the night, and I took over to finish the borders. Here is what we came up with!

Little 4-patch blocks (to fulfill the Quilter’s Choice – Using 4 prompt) in sets of two to create our four borders of 4-patches. In between the 4-patch units, I added blue/white strip sets. Don’t look too closely, they are not all even – this is definitely a border that made me “make it work”! LOL. I am very happy with how this border turned out, and so delighted that now all four women are represented in this quilt.

Here is the schedule – we are almost done! Has it gone fast for you, too?!

Oh yes! It just gets better and better, Wendy. Combining the blue and white of the two previous borders was a brilliant idea. It is also heartwarming how you have woven the generations together in the quilt. Your daughter’s contribution is delightful. Love those fresh four patches.

Your quilt is so charming Eva. Love everything about it, from the elephants to the hugs and kisses to the triangles to the blocks within blocks. Also love your clever storage method for when you are not working on the quilt

    • Eva

Mariss, thank you so much for your kind comment. Yes.. you are familiarized with this species … often they destroy but they could be so soft and clever. Saw a picture where an elefant goes over a barrier .. so soft and not destroying. I love them. And yes, less space gives you tasks and for spray the layers together I go to the basement where the washing machines of all condo families are and do it there. Happy autumn time!

Wendy, this will be such a neat keepsake! It’s been fun to watch you tie together each round. This one with Molly was particularly fun.

I like Eva’s method for working on her beautiful quilt, that is a great idea. Those elephants are wonderful.
Love the 4 generation SAHRR! I see you just repositioned those 4-patches, very clever. Did your daughter approve of the layout?

    • Eva

Hi there, this comment shows me… elephants are big but can force you to sew in small pieces…. lol
and if you ever look how soft they can use their long “nose” to pick something up to eat .. and test.. elephants are much more sensibel and soft than we think! They live together and have a social behavior, amazing animals. And the family who gets it – will hopefully snuggle under it soft like the animals dance on it.

I love your ‘proof of participation’ photo of your daughter’s input into this 4 generational tribute quilt top. The touch of living generations touching the fabric of the older generations no longer living – this is deeply moving to me.

What a fun idea to get your daughter involved, Wendy! I love your four patch idea, and the neat design that came out of it. Love the blue and white together, too. It was also fun to see how Eva’s SAHRR is coming along – that elephant print is so fun! Now it’s my turn to do some figuring out!

    • Eva

thank you for your comment.. I saw yours and it is amazing!! SAHRR makes so much fun and it is a good training to work without a pattern and think!

  • Kate

How fun to include your daughter in this border. Eva made some very interesting design choices. Looking forward to seeing how you each finish off your versions. Hard to believe we just have one more border.

    • Bernie

Eva- this one is for you. The SAHRR is progressing beautifully! The fabrics are gorgeous and I love the narrow stripe of blue, it is lovely!!

      • Eva

Bernie, thanks for your kind words. Highly appreciated. You help me to go on and not give up. Unfortunately the light is bad when I am lately can send my pictures to Wendy. At the end I will do a picture in daylight, than all the colours will be more clear and nicer. And it is more a turquoise than a blue.
Ordered fabric again today … lol … because running out of my test piece of 12 inch…. Have a great week ahead!

  • Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl

What a delight to have your daughter contribute to this round (and with that, it brings your quilt up to 4 generations – perfect timing!). I like what you two designed; the two color piecing of the other border elements adds nice whimsy to the round.

  • Bernie

Wendy, this arrangement of 4-patch blocks and strips is so clever. It doesn’t look like 4-patch blocks at all. Cool.
Love seeing Molly working on this heirloom project with you. It is such a special little quilt.

I really like the way you and Molly have designed this latest border. It is so special for the two of you to be working on this quilt together. It will hold special meaning for the both of you in the years to come. And Eva’s quilt is coming right along. I love the way the borders compliment the elephant piece. It is so lovely.

    • Eva

Thank you for your kind comment. Yes.. these little elephants make me smile each time I work with them. Have a lovely week.

  • Eva

Everything what look light and easy is hard work. So, I guess it needed really a good idea to find this composition. And as all the others assume, it looks perfect and may be shows the bright blue sky and clouds in a swedisch summertime? Love what Molly did and want to applause to her that she likes to be together with you, likes to sew with you and that she is a part of it. What a great story behind this quilt!

  • quiltinggail

I absolutely love that Eva tried something new!! Such fun! And it’s looking fantastic!
AND … to have your daughter make the 4 patches … how perfect is that? The round looks great!

    • Eva

Thank you so much for this great compliment. It helps me to like it. I am not quite sure if it is really a good composition, when I see all the other perfect measured tops. But your and all the nice comments here motivate me to go on and stay tuned. Great week ahead. 🙂

  • Nancy @ Grace and Peace Quilting

Cute little improv corner blocks by Eva! Fun that your daughter worked on this round, Wendy!!!

  • The Morning Latte

    Love those little elephants too!
There is so much creativity and thought going into your quilt! And your daughter will remember that day forever. So, are hubs and son joining in on any of the remaining borders!? ;oD

  • rl2b2017

Hi Wendy and Molly! Nice job on this border. I think the four-patch was a brilliant choice and the layout really works well. I’d say you two collaborate well together and should do more of it! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
