2019 Color Challenge Quilt Top

My 2019 Monthly Color Challenge blocks are finally a quilt top. 2019 was my first year participating in the monthly color challenge with Patterns by Jen.  Although Jen gave a design for the layout of the blocks, I wanted to do something different. However, it took some time to decide how I wanted the top to look. Then I saw a layout of a different quilt on social media that gave me the idea of what I wanted to do.

In order for the design to work, I needed one more block, so I picked one of the blocks and made a second block in a different color.

You might recall that Wilbur assisted with the layout.

My plan for Sunday, following a nap, was to take some photos with BigJ holding the quilt. However, we went for a drive, and then the weather was so perfect, we sat on the deck while we watched the storm roll in. Just as it started to rain, I remembered I was going to take some photos! So I’m opting to use a less than perfect photo so I can finally show you the layout.

The first 12 blocks are in the order of the month they were made, starting with January at the top, then going left to right. The duplicate block is the bright aqua one at the bottom of the photo. It’s not quite that bright; it blends in well with the other blocks.  The background squares are actually more black than in the photo, but it’s not a solid black. It is a mottled gray/black design. The blocks look a bit like they are on a blackboard.

I’m happy to have this quilt top pieced and ready for quilting. I like the layout so well, I may do the same for this year’s color challenge blocks. We’ll see!

That is a great layout, more of a modern sampler type quilt. Ha, now you remind me that I missed the opportunity yesterday to get photos of a quilt too!!!!!!!!! Out of sight out of mind I guess.

Love how you layed out the top! I was thinking of joining in next year and might need to do this layout as well.

Love that layout! And the black/gray is a nice compliment to the bright colors in the blocks. Very nice!

I like that layout, too! Don’t you love it when an idea clicks and you just know that’swhat you have to do?! I like that background fabric – almost looks like it has texture. Sounds like a nice day yesterday!

Oh, I love this layout! It’s kind of like putting them on point without all the finicky triangles! Totally stealing this idea to use with orphan blocks. I think I have a batch of 13 of one particular block lurking in my piles right now. Thanks for the inspiration, and the glimpse of Wilbs 🙂

When you said one more block I thought, I wonder…and yup, its the one I was thinking of for this years! I love this and what a great job you did on it. The background reminds me of essex linen but not. Now that I see it done, I really love love love it, and I think I will do it for next years. Hooray for getting it together and now it can go to your quilter!

I love the colors in the quilt and the layout is wonderful. It looks great against the green lawn. That aqua block looks like it was just one more of the many blocks you made…not out of place at all. Congrats on a great top.

Hi Wendy! Nice job on getting this quilt top finished. The blocks really DO look like they’re hanging or being displayed on a blackboard. So nice! Doesn’t it feel nice to have them all together as a quilt top?!! ~smile~ Roseanne

    Hi Wendy!
I really like the blocks on that grey/black background – it makes them pop without saying “Look at me, making those blocks pop.” (which, I think a solid black would have done).
Nice! Now … do you know how your’e going to quilt it??? 🙂

I love this! Gives me hope for my final background choice for the 2020 challenge. I really like that dark background. And your assistant looks like a sweetheart. 🙂
