Firm Foundation

My Firm Foundation quilt is finished and has been gifted, so I thought you might like to see the finish. Firm Foundation is a quilt pattern designed by My Wandering Path and uses the Songbook fabrics designed by Fancy That Design House. I had specific reasons for choosing this quilt to give to my cousin Lee and his wife, Susan.

A few years ago, I gifted this quilt to Lee’s son and his wife for a wedding gift. Lee has asked me a few times when he was going to get a quilt, so without telling him, I began considering what quilt to make. When I came across Firm Foundation together with the Songbook fabrics, I knew it was the one. Lee and I share a rich family legacy of faith and growing up in the church where we were raised on the hymns shown in the panels of this quilt. Lee and Susan also have a deep love of music, and Lee is a retired pastor. He also married BigJ and me, and even forgave me (I think) when I forgot to have our picture taken with him on our wedding day (which I regret to this day).

Anyway, here is Firm Foundation before I took it to Connie for quilting.

It is a large quilt, measuring 66″ x 88″. Here is the photo of it after Connie has worked her magic. It was a very windy day, not to mention dirty and dusty outdoors, so I opted for an indoor photos. My quilt room is the brightest room in the house, and even though I have a lot of space in the room, we had a bit of a challenge getting a photo. BigJ is behind the quilt and has it all the way to the ceiling and it is still draping on the floor!

Here’s a close up of the quilting detail. Connie did an edge to edge design with musical notes. How cool is that?! I was delighted, and so were Lee and Susan.

I even remembered to stitch on a label. The panels had to be trimmed for the blocks, so I thought it would be fun to use a couple of those trimmings with the label, and it worked.

Giving quilts to others makes it all worthwhile, doesn’t it? I hope Lee and Susan enjoy the Firm Foundation quilt for many years to come!

Before I go, just want to remind you to brew some extra coffee or tea on Friday and allow for a little more blog reading, so you can enjoy all the fun with the Villa Rosa Designs Fast and More Fun Blog Hop. It will be my day to post, and I hope you stop by to see what I’ve made!

Not only will you be inspired by all the quilts in the Hop, there are some amazing, generous prizes that you don’t want to miss! We’ll see you then!

In the meantime, I hope you are enjoying some creative projects of your own!

So many parts of this make this a special one. I love the hymn fabric. The over all look, the color combination, the quilting. How very special it must have been for him to receive it, and for you to know you did it for him.
    Very nice.

What a meaningful, lovely quilt. And even bigger than BigJ! Connie really did good with that magical quilting, but it is gorgeous even without it. I wish that fabric had been around (and that I had been a quilter) before Mom and Daddy were gone – she and Daddy would have loved this one.

Oh! This quilt looks just wonderful! That e2e design is just too perfect for it!! I might have to keep my eyes out for that one (esp with my musically-inclined kids). As rewarding as it must’ve been to make and gift, I’m sure they loved receiving it even more. A happy quilt story!

What a special quilt for Lee and Susan. I bet they were thrilled and will enjoy it for years to come. I love the way the quilt connects back to your relationship and how you were both raised, and the quilting motif couldn’t be more perfect. Congratulations on the finish and gifting such a meaningful quilt to people who will clearly treasure your hard work.

Some quilts take longer than others to simmer in the back of our minds. I love that you found both the perfect pattern and the right fabric for this quilt. The special relationship you have with your brother and his wife shows in this quilt and I am sure he will treasure this quilt for a long time to come. Congratulations on a beautiful finish.

A true labour of love. I am sure they will enjoy sleeping under it.
I am in awe of the thought that went into the making of this BIG quilt. Such beautiful connections. And the piecing is spectacular. I also love the note that Connie added.
      Well done!
