I Like Thursdays #8

By the time you are reading this I Like Thursdays #8, my bags will be packed and I’ll be ready to go. I’m joining in with LeeAnna of Not Afraid of Color and the rest of my quilting friends who join in on our I Like Thursdays posts. You can find the whole list of us on LeeAnna’s site. I hope you stop over and share some comments with them too.

Do you like to prepare for a trip? I don’t, honestly, but my list of what I need to bring is so much less than it used to be, it doesn’t take me long. I do like to put it off as long as I can, so with that in mind, let’s get to my likes for the week.

Squirrels!

Of course you all know I love the quilty squirrels, the projects that swoop into your quilt room and make you drop everything else and make them. They are my favorite type of squirrel! However, it can cause a constructive mess in my sewing room. Trying to reach my design wall during those projects is a bit like this little guy enjoying a suet snack.

I have to do gymnastic feats of wonder to get those blocks on my little design board. Thank goodness I can take my design board off the wall and make it a bit more reachable!

Cute Coffee Mugs

After all that shenanigans in the quilt room, I need a cup of coffee, so I like to use this little mug my daughter gave me for Christmas.

It’s perfect for a small cup, and the curve is just right for cupping my hand around it while I put my feet up for a bit.

Sandals!

Speaking of feet, I’m thinking sunshine and warm temps, so when I saw these Birkenstock at half price, I had to have them.

They’re pink! (I’d only be more excited if they were orange.) Can’t wait to break these in. I may be taking more shoes on the trip than outfits – ha!

Longhorn Cattle

Last year, while driving across the plains of Oklahoma, I enjoyed seeing the longhorn cattle. We stopped at a quilt shop in Boise City and I found this little hand painted panel of two longhorns.

I Like Thursdays #8 - This fabric panel, Springs Surprise, hand painted by artist Kathleen McElwaine - piecefulthoughts.com

The artist is Kathleen McElwaine and this piece is entitled Springs Surprise. The block is about 10-1/2 inches square, I think (I didn’t measure). I’m not sure what I will create with this, but likely a mini for my wall.

Warmth

We went out for lunch the other day, purely for the main reason that I was running low on coffee beans. The shop where I buy the beans is nearby one of our favorite lunch spots. It’s a win-win! The weather was sunny and wam(er), but I was grateful for this little fire at our table on an enclosed patio.

Plus it was just fun to take pictures of the flames with my phone.

Encouraging New Quilters

Recently, my cousin’s daughter caught the quilting bug. We’ve had a few chats online as she was getting started. She is a natural and has taken to it very well. I sent her a box of fabric on Monday, she got it on Tuesday and had several blocks made from the fabrics within a short amount of time that same day! I am delighted that I can share some knowledge and encourage her as she begins. That makes me smile and is my biggest like for the week.

That’s a good note to end my I Like Thursdays #8, don’t you think? I hope you have had a week full of likes too! If so, let me know about it!

I won’t be posting next week, but if you follow me on Instagram, I’ll likely post a few pics there.

Happy sewing, my friends!

Wendy

Hi Wendy! Safe travels and have lots and lots of fun. Enjoy the sunshine and especially those cute sandals. Oh to be able to wear sandals! It’s supposed to be 60 here on Sunday – I might just head out for a pedicure. HAHA! Love the mug from your daughter, and how fabulous to be sparking on a new quilter. I hope she lets you share some of her first efforts. I wonder what drew her in? I’ll be watching EG for all the fun happenings. Happy Thursday! ~smile~ Roseanne

I’m always amazed at how fast Thursday comes every week – is it because of these post I wonder or is it just that time flies! I love your curved mug – I love pottery coffee mugs and have too many of them. The sandals are cute but I can’t have anything in between the toes so would pass for other versions. Have a fun safe trip

I used to love packing for a trip and made lists ahead of time so I could happily check off things as I packed them. Not so much now!
    Love your sandals!
I’m from Oklahoma, and the Panhandle is not the prettiest part of the state, but I’m glad you were able to find a quilt shop. 🙂
Have a great trip, wherever you go!

What a nice list of likes. My packing lists have slimmed down quite a bit too. My friend Sue was an inspiration in lightening the load. She traveled Europe for a month with just a small ruck sack. I’m not as minimalist as she is, but it improved my willingness to do without certain things. I loved seeing the longhorns in Texas too. They have a Texas state longhorn herd! Have fun on your trip.

Those squirrels…overreaching can be a dangerous thing…be careful! I love your new sandals and was even thinking of busting some out at the retreat I am at this weekend – but then I would be bringing more shoes than clothes. Have a great trip. I’ll mail your package after the weekend. Love your loves, and especially that little handpainted piece!

What a fun Thursday post! Love your new Birkenstock’s ! They are truly my favorite shoe in any style or color but the pink is so bright and fun!
Speaking of squirrels we have a black squirrel coming around every day! He sure stands out against the white snow!
My Thursday like is taking care of our daughter’s Corgi! She brings the joy and cute factor for sure!!
Packing for a trip takes me awhile especially to a warm spot! I have to search for clothes I haven’t worn for 6 months and make sure they still fit! Ha!
Enjoy your trip and the warm sunshine!

LOVE the sandals….wouldn’t want them in orange…orange and I have never been friends…hehe…but that pink is gorgeous! Sweet mug as well…I’m sure from sweet daughter! Today is my oldest’s birthday…shes 38 today…I’m still trying to figure out how I could have a daughter who’s 38 when I’m “39 and holding”…lol!

what, birks in pink and cute cows, and coffee mugs?? Yea! I had a pair of orange birks once and wore. them. out. I love birks, and now love olakai sandles… very supportive although they look flat. a little fire right at the table, so cute!

  • Diann Bottrell

Those sandals are fun! I think you’re going to get a lot of use out of them. I love quilty squirrels, too – you just never know what might come of them! Your longhorn fabric piece is really neat. Fabric souvenirs are the best! Have fun on your trip!

  • Gail

Had to laugh at the squirrel and you getting to your design wall! There are times I can relate!
Enjoy your trip and break those sandles in quick!
How fun to support a new quilter! What an encouragement that she made blocks so quickly!
    Happy Quilting!

OMG so many great like. I feel like that squirrel as I continue to clean up the spare bedroom, but I want to sew a bit. I am about 1/3 of the way. Love longhorns they are so interesting. I agree a favorite mug and coffee is the way to go. So thrilled that you are passing on your quilting expertise to someone.

  • Needle and Foot

Those birks are fantastic!! I haven’t had a pair in years – they are com comfy.
Also love the hand painted fabric. I am excited to see what you do with that. It is really a nice piece.

    Have a fun trip Wendy!

what a really fun list of likes! I too like squirrels but I don’t like when they tip out the bird feeder everywhere. I also like cows and i love that handpainted panel! It’ll make into something special! I like doing mini-wall hangings, the same satisfaction as making a pillow without the certainty that the dogs will pick it up and take it outside into the mud! Have a good trip!

  • Jocelyn Thurston

I really like that improv quilt you are making btw.
Meanwhile, all your likes are mine too. Squirrels abound here in both fur and cloth. I love a special cup and using one that was a gift always brings to mind the person who gifted it.
I had no idea Birkenstocks came in anything other than brown. Pinks are pretty. Daughter loves the for work and she’s on her feet all her shift. Anyway, enjoy the wearing!
