Purple Sage Burst Mini

While I’m in the middle of pattern testing and sewing projects that I can’t reveal yet, I like to take little breaks to do some sewing just for fun. This is one of those projects.

When Rose (SomethingRosemade) posted her fabulous Kiwi and Mango Tango Quilt, using the Bundle Buster pattern from Quilting Jetgirl, of course I wanted to get the pattern. Rose and I often share the same likes when it comes to quilting. She’s a bad good influence on me, and she shares her squirrels freely. I love quilty friends like that!

So I went to Quilting Jetgirl’s site to purchase the Bundle Buster pattern, and then purchased the Cross Check and Single Burst Mini Quilts pattern as well. I mean, as long as I’m there, right?!

The pattern I chose to make is the Single Burst Mini quilt. The biggest challenge was finding the right fabric shades from my stash. I had purple in the right yardage amounts. Purple is not a go-to fabric for me, so I was surprised I had so much of it in my stash! I started with this pull.

I didn’t like the purple in the foreground; it was okay, but something just wasn’t right. It looks better in the photo than it did to my eye. Then I tried this one.

Still not great, but it’s what I had to work with. I liked the patterned fabric and was curious how it would work out. It looked okay when I took a photo in black and white so I could see the value.

A few cuts of fabric and I was ready to sew. Of course, I completely forgot to take pictures!

If you’ve never tried a Quilting Jetgirl pattern, you really should. Her patterns are so well done, are aethestically pleasing, and explained so well. This little mini quilt top was finished in under an hour once the fabric was chosen.

It measures 18.5 inches by 25.5 inches. As far as the fabric, I know that the medium fabric is Grunge; I have no information on the other two. The dark fabric is a solid blender.

I’m already thinking about how to quilt this. I can’t wait to play with my purple thread!

What have you been working on this week?

    Another little gem.
I once said to a friend that the stash of my favourite colour (plum) always seemed to be low. She laughed and said it was because I always used it up. So, the opposite probably applied with your large stash of purple

  • karenfae

that is a little one isn’t it. Love the purple – I had to glance up at the fabric shelf and see if I have purple – barely any – some colors I am really low on

It turned out great. I do like the second purple better than the first, but it’s hard to tell without seeing it made up. Both would have worked, I think.

Lovely, Wendy. I could really see and appreciate the transparency when I stood back from the computer a bit.

Thanks, Laura. It’s not quite right, but pretty good since it’s all pulled from my stash!

Beautiful! Love Yvonne’s transparency and your interpretation of it. Purple is one of my faves so I don’t have a lot as I use it a lot. Great job!

Hi Wendy! This is a fun little squirrel project. I have not tried one of Yvonne’s patterns yet, but will certainly do so based on your glowing recommendation. This looks like it might be a bit too big to join your other recent modern piece that your husband hung for you? I’m looking forward to seeing how you decide to quilt it. Do you enjoy ruler work? That might be an option, if you do?! ~smile~ Roseanne

Yes, this is bigger. I like the look of ruler work, but I don’t have the ruler foot yet. My walking foot and I just might have a date …

I really like how this turned out, Wendy! I agree that the second photo/fabric choice was the best one. I’m not drawn to sewing with purple until I see something like what you’ve made, and then I want to!

Beautiful! I love that the center block has a bit more pattern to it, really brings out the transparency effect. I love all the purple!

I don’t consider myself drawn to purples much. Maybe that is why I also have a lot in my stash. Probably because I don’t use it enough. The purple was perfect to do the transparency technique.

Your fabric decisions were perfect. Watching the changes between pulls showed such change with each step. That will be a cute mini – and a fun one to quilt.
