To Do Tuesday

I have some progress to show you today in this To Do Tuesday post. I’ll be linking up with Texas Quilt Gal for her To Do Tuesday linky party, along with the others who join in. It’s a great party to check out (or join in) for some inspiration and fun.

Last week I was busy getting last minute projects done, so let me catch you up a bit. Here is my list from my last post:

  • Test Pattern reveal
  • Music Blog Hop
  • Christmas projects

One item not included in that list is my challenge quilt for The Endeavourers Art Quilt group. The theme for this challenge was “boustraphedon”. What? You’re not familiar with that word? It’s a word that has fascinated me since I read it in a book, so I was looking forward to this challenge. Here’s my finished quilt.

This final piece is not at all what I had in mind for this challenge; that’s one of my favorite things about these challenge quilts, seeing what the final outcome will be. You can read all about my quilt, as well as the others and their interpretations of the theme, right here

One thing I did not mention in my challenge post, while making those flying geese, I used Quilting Jetgirl’s Updated Four at a Time Flying Geese tutorial, and it made the construction of those units so much more enjoyable. With just a small change, it makes trimming those geese so much easier and accurate!

Okay, back to last week’s list. I did post the reveal of Heading North, the pattern release from Sandra at mmmQuilts. This was a fun quilt to make, and you can read about my version here

My project for the Music Blog Hop is finished, and all I need to do is get the photos taken and the post written.

I didn’t start on any Christmas projects, but how about a little update on Harry the Crow? His wings and tail are finished and ready when it’s time to sew them on.

What the photo doesn’t show is that one of the printed black fabrics has just a bit of sparkle to it, so it adds a little iridescence to his wings and tail. I also used a metallic thread to hand stitch the feather components together.

On Monday afternoon, I got his legs constructed. Next I’ll be painting them, then shaping them. You can also see his beak in the photo, which is carved from a tree branch, and ready to be inserted.

Part of the reason I didn’t post last Tuesday was that I went on a little mini sewing retreat with Vicki (Vicki’s Crafts and Quilting). It was so much fun. While Vicki was sewing circles around me, I was talking – haha! I did get some sewing done, however, and I’ll show you that in a later post.

This week, I am keeping my list simple for this To Do Tuesday.

  • Cookie Exchange Blog Hop project
  • Firm Foundation block cutting
  • Construct Harry the Crow

That should keep me busy, but I won’t be surprised at all if my inner squirrel stops by for a visit!

What are you working on this week?

Wendy

I love your take on the boustraphedon art quilt! I’m lookong to see your crow with his wings and tail attached.

  • Barbara J Stanbro

The crow is looking amazing. I love those fabrics with a little sparkle. I always wish they’d show up better in their pictures.

  • texasquiltgal

I thought I was quite the word buff, but I had never seen the word boustrophedon! I love your take on it, and your freehand farmer and oxen is magnificent. Mr Crow is looking more and more real – eeek! Thank you for sharing with To Do Tuesday!

  • Kathleen McCormick

That is quite the interesting prompt for your Endeavor group. I really like what you came up with and loved looking at all the versions. You have a lot of things in the works…that is fun and even more fun that you and Vicki were sewing together for two days. Good luck with your week….I need to buckle down after my gym session and voting today!

Hi Wendy! I think we both learned the same meaning of boustrophedon or as the ox turns. Google just corrected my spelling but I’ve seen it written both ways! PERFECT representation of “b”. I’ve been meaning to try Yvonne’s suggestion for flying geese! Harry the crow is really coming along – can’t wait to see the finished result. Ooh, and the inner squirrel just might pop over?!! Good luck with this week’s list and the squirrel that is lurking. You know you can see it! I think he’s chatting with Wilbs right now. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Oooh, I love adding to my vocabulary, thank you! The flying geese do a wonderful job representing the plowing and the connection to nature that all farmers seem to have (I’m sure they know all about migration seasons). Sounds like you had a wonderful time with Vicky last week. 🙂 I hope you have another wonderful week ahead, too.

  • The Morning Latte

Well, I just saw you DID name the crow! Harry is looking amazing! Love the fabric that brings in that shimmery deep dark blue–perfect. And the feet! I’m not sure I’d have the patience (or nimble fingers) but yours turned out really well! Your art work in the challenge quilt is really well done too so sheesh! A talent-filled post today!

  • Vicki in MN

Pretty shiny fabric you chose for the crow, will be fun to see the finish. You already know I think your challenge piece is awesome! You are the queen at these challenges:)

  • Rochelle Summers

Oh Wow! You have been busy! I love your challenge quilt. I really love the earthy background and how it contrasts with the sky. I still have to try the improved 4 at a time tutorial. Harry the crow is going to be beautiful. I think you need to talk a little bit about how you constructed those feet. Isn’t it wonderful to have a friend to sew with, talk with, giggle with? Good luck with everything this week.

  • Laura

Love, love, love your Endeavor challenge quilt! I showed it to Hubby and he understood the flying geese right away! You knocked this one way out of the park!
Harry is looking great! Can’t wait to him come together! 🙂

I’m always intimidated by you guys who always have your goals ready for these To-Do Tuesdays! I’m never sure what I’ll be working on until I go up to the studio, look around, and decide in the moment!

  • Bonnie in VA

So you dangle a new word in front of us and then don’t tell us about it? Boo, hiss… and it wasn’t in the dictionary I checked. Hum, is it German by chance? Your piece for it is very strong. And, oh the crow pieces. That is going to be fabulous.

    • Eva

Hi Bonnie, no it is not german. Never heard. i checked Wikipedia and learned as well a lot. My german wiki told me it means… like the oxan who is doing the rows in the field…. Or like the cows turning… or it means the writing system which invert direction each line, from left to right and the right to left… i think it must be a latin word. But as well, leaned as well a lot here! And so phantastic translated in a mini quilt!!!

  • Kate

Your challenge quilt turned out beautifully! Your version of Heading North turned out nicely too. I’m looking forward to seeing this crow come together.

  • Eva

Love the fabric of Harry! We bike riders love sculls and I have a lot fabric collected with sculls. This is so fantastic for Harry!!! But it is a very slim Harry… we have to feed em, or?
