Monday Block Party

How about a little Monday Block Party here at Pieceful Thoughts? I’ll catch you up on my progress with a BOM and my 100 Day Project.

Churn Dash Block of the Month

This is a personal block of the month I started at the beginning of the year. Each month, I am sewing three churn dash blocks, ranging in size from 6.5″ to 12.5″ (unfinished). Here are the blocks so far:

I’m sewing whatever size within the set range that I feel like each month. I don’t have a plan for layout yet. I may begin to sketch one out when I reach halfway. For now, I’m satisfied with just enjoying the process of making the churn dash blocks.

The background fabric for the blocks is Kona Pacific. I’m using scraps for the churns.

The 100 Day Project 2020

I decided to join in the 100 Day Project this year, along with Kitty Wilkin of Night Quilter. Kitty is making some amazing tree blocks, as well as marking her runs by making a quilt. Be sure to go check out her blog and Instagram to see her work. She is always an inspiration to me.

Monday Block Party today at Pieceful Thoughts. Come and see the projects I'm working on - piecefulthoughts.com

For my 100 Day Project, I am making a mini plus block each day. These little blocks are 3.5″ unfinished. Since I am a more negative thinker than positive, these little blocks remind me each day to shift my focus to the positive. I post them each day on my Instagram feed (@piecefulwendy). It’s been a good exercise for me, and I’m enjoying how quickly the little blocks go together!

Would you like to see Blocks 1-46? Yes? Here you go!

You may notice the gray plus block third from the left in the second row. That was an off day, and I thought to put gray in for those days. However, I’m rethinking that, and may change that block when I come to put the quilt together. On the other hand, I may leave it, just for what it represents.

I’m also adding rainbow blocks every now and then, just for fun. All of the blocks are made using my fabric scraps. I haven’t yet decided on how I will put them together when they are all done. I have a few ideas, but I’ll keep pondering.

My Monday Block Party wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t mention my 2020 Monthly Color Challenge blocks. This fun challenge is hosted by Patterns by Jen, and is a very relaxing one block per month challenge. You can see my blocks in this post, and you can read more about the challenge over at Patterns by Jen

Is there a Monday Block Party going on in your quilt room too? Are you making something fun, or have you given yourself a personal challenge? Tell me about it in the comments below.

I’ll be back tomorrow with my To Do Tuesday list. Hope I see you then!

  • Quilting is in my Blood

Hi Wendy. I’m so enjoying seeing the progress with both your Churn Dash blocks and your Plus blocks (I also think the grey block has its place with all the others). I love that you have your personal BOM. I don’t have a personal challenge going right now other than to be more intentional in both my fabric purchases and the projects that I commit to. Otherwise I find myself too scattered. Have a great day, Mary.

Sew sweet, Wendy!!! I especially like the long churn dashes. And the plus blocks are great. The grey will become obscure against all the happy blocks. Got to have some realisticness in there.

I am loving the plan of no-plan with the churn dash blocks!
And, I vote to leave the gray plus… because it’s just part of the story.

Wendy I am enjoying your blocks. I vote to keep the gray block it shows true days happening. Thanks for sharing Kitty’s information. I follow her on IG, but haven’t seen posts from her in forever. Hate that IG decides what I should see. I’m headed over to like a lot of her post, so that maybe IG will think I want to see them. Have a great one!

Fun to see your progress on your churn’s. But really fun to see all the plus blocks together! I think you need to leave the gray one, it’s how you felt that day and that is okay-you’re human! I think I’ll go quilt another donation quilt this morning.

  • Needle and Foot

I have been anxious to see all the plus blocks together and it did not disappoint – this will be a wonderful quilt!! So fun to look at all the different fabrics you have in there. This will be a treasure Wendy. 🙂

I’ve heard of people doing a block a day but I don’t like any one block enough to do that yet. Also what discipline you have. I happen to love seeing a quilt of blocks, all the same lines, with a surprising or less contrast element in them. The line is continued but it’s more organic seeing color come and go so I say yes to the gray ones now and then.

I love all your plus blocks. So pretty and cheery. I’m loving the churn dash blocks too. Curious to see what you’ll do with those. I’d leave the gray block for just the reason you state.

Your churn dashes are so fun – love the Kona Pacific background! It’s also fun to see the plus blocks all together. I love all that variety of color! I’ve got to make my color challenge block, so it’s going on this week’s to-do list!

Love the different sizes of Churn Dashes – squares and rectangles… they’ll look great once you put them all together!
And your 100 day project is coming along! Love it!
    Happy Quilting! 🙂

I love your churn dashes! So vibrant against the blue background. And the idea to mix and match the sizes is really fun, especially the rectangular ones 🙂

  • Kathleen McCormick

Love the churn dashes and your 100 blocks look fabulous! I think wait on the decision about the gray until the end. You may have another, like the rainbows…or it may go away or to the back. Whatever it does, it will be just right!

  • Sandra

I have been loving seeing your plus blocks on Instagram, as well as knowing what they represent. I think leaving the gray in there is a good reminder that it’s not all perfect, as it appears on Instagram and in blogs… I love Kitty’s work as well; I wanted to do trees of some kind for my RSC this year but I couldn’t get my act together to design a block! There’s always next year or start whenever I want right? I absolutely love what you’re doing with your churn dash blocks— the tall skinny one is the coolest!

Hi Wendy! What a fun post filled with loads of pretties. Your churn dash blocks are all inspiring – it makes me want to hop over and make a quilt top myself. One-hundred days of plus blocks are almost to the half-way point. Woohoo! I can’t wait to see where this ends up. It’s mostly a COVID challenge, eh?! ~smile~ Roseanne

  • Preeti

Hmmm you come across as pretty positive to me, at least in your writing. In any case your tiny blocks bring a big dose of cheer. So keep on making 🙂

  • Carol Andrews

Wendy I love your Churn Dash blocks. It’s my go to when I need to make a fast quilt but I never thought of varying the sizes and shapes! Your plus blocks are beautiful, too 😉 Carol
